Hmmm, not sure that I'd be at all comfortable with Neesham batting at 6 in test cricket, even if his all round numbers this season (averaging 56 with the bat and 21 with the ball) are pretty sensational. Watling would have to move up and bat at 6 imo.
Yeah, Watling's capable of batting 6 anyway. It's a good selection imo. I'm glad they haven't gone for someone like Ellis.

IMO they missed a trick, a fourth seamer could have been bought in for Sodhi and Devcich could then be used as a specialist spinner at 7.

It's a good selection because I like Neesham but I do wonder if Ryder had been considered since he's available for the ODIs after Christmas anyway?

Is Hesson always going to want to play an all rounder in the top six?

With Sodhi being a young legspinner and Wagner beening Wagner, yes

Basically, if they don't get Vettori back for the India series, one of McCullum or Ryder won't play.
So Ryder won't play.

Regarding whether Ryder was considered for the 3rd test, I don't think much has really changed. Ryder doesn't really feel like he's ready for test cricket yet and wants to get his feet wet in LO cricket first.

yeah, I mean, we've gone over it a few times already haven't we? The other outside option mentioned is that they pick 4 seamers + Ryder + Williamson, but we've heard "We're picking a team for 5 days rather than the first day" numerous times from Baz so I'm not sure how likely that is to occur.

God I'm speculating a lot lately. It really is an intriguing question though.

The thing is Narine doesn't look like a test quality spinner IMO, gun in LO though.
Really? he certainly looked test quality to me when he faced NZ at home!!..i guess we'll have to see how he develops over the next 12 months as he's gonna be the main man again now Shilly has been banned!!...Permaul is also interesting!..he's taken 2 or more wickets in every innings he's bowled thus far...just needs to add a few more tricks up his sleeve and i think he'll be good too.

Watling should bat ahead of Anderson anyway IMO.

From what I've seen on him, he doesn't spin the ball significantly so he won't gain much turn unless the pitch is a turner and he isn't big on flight. All he is going for him is being unreadable. Of course you have seen a lot more of him than me, so correct me if am wrong.

Narine actually puts a lot on the ball despite not really looking like he will; he certainly gets enough turn when the pitch is at all receptive to it. His main problem is the fact that he doesn't put any body into his bowling at all - he basically just wanders up and delivers it chest on - which means he doesn't get any drift or drop; he's never really going to beat a good batsman in the air.

"Variation" was enough to troll India into mass suicide against Mendis, so there's plenty of possibility that Narine will have the same effect on NZ.

Well, he did, in the West Indies. Hopefully some common sense prevails. He's not Herath.

Just a theory on this - and I may be completely off the mark - but perhaps you can't get the traditional off-spinner's body shape when you bowl the carrom ball so regularly. Neither Ashwin, Mendis nor Narine - who are the three I can think of who bowl in that 'style', for lack of a better term, drive through the crease in nearly the same way to Nathan Lyon. It seems to me like bowling the deliveries that are flicked out of the fingers wouldn't be aided at all by having the traditional shape of an off-spinner's action.

Ashwin's the least reliant on it with his off break, from what I can tell, and as such is the one more likely to beat batsmen in the air - but he still doesn't do it often, and his effectiveness on non-turning tracks has been questioned quite a bit. Mendis is plain ineffective when the batsman isn't coming at him, and from limited evidence Narine could go the same way.
