**Official** South Africa in England 2012

I actually think that Aus will have a tough time in the coming season, and not only from South Africa. Could just as easily become #1 as slip to #6.

I have no problem admitting SA were the better side this series in all departments, but that is absolute rubbish.
Na I don't think it's absolute rubbish at all. It might be a slightly exaggerated, but Steyn and Philander are in a different league to Anderson and Broad imo...and I think, really, this series is a pretty good indication of that - i.e. two good batting line-ups to bowl to (SA's better, but England has home conditions), yet Philander and Steyn outperformed them considerably....you're not going to get much more of a direct comparison that this. Think Anderson did deserve better returns, and definitely more than Broad, who has better stats for the series...but, nevertheless, I think Anderson can just flatter to deceive a bit by producing some magic with the new ball but becoming a bit innocuous after that on occasions. Anderson is still a gun bowler though, and definitely the best England have to offer. Broad on the other hand just isn't nearly as good as some people have been making him out to be imo. It all sort-of spiralled out of control after one, admittedly, excellent series against India, but na, sorry, I'm not buying the hype yet...don't think he is any more likely to become a really top tier bowler than someone like Morkel or Siddle. Pretty good bowler, yeah, but nothing more than that at this stage.

I can understand some people being hesitant to have Philander ahead of Anderson, though I'm prepared to put Philander ahead I guess you may want to see how he does on the subcontinent which is fair enough.

But there is simply no legitimate argument whatsoever one can make to say that Anderson is near Steyn now. Steyn is definitely a class above. That shouldn't be a slight on Anderson, he is a very good bowler and the 2nd or 3rd (depends on your criteria of rating - longevity vs. what you see now) fast bowler in the world. But Steyn is really ****ing awesome and probably as close to an all-time great as a fast bowler with his amount of test matches can be. Anderson not being in the same class hardly means he's no good.

I agree, but don't forget people that the bowler at the other end can have a large influence, and throughout the series broad bowled absolute poo, bresnan was unthreatening, as was swann.

Anderson I don't think bowled badly, wasn't amazing, but the saffers had the benefit of sustained pressure from 4 quicks bowling well and taking wickets.

Yeah look that's a good point for sure.

I don't think this series actually changed my opinion anyway, I always had Steyn a class above Anderson (and everyone else in the world) tbf. Just think this series rammed it home a little bit more.

Steyn the better fielder too tbh. Anderson drops catches whereas Steyn runs out English batsmen whilst putting his hat back on

Honestly, there's very little between them having watched alot of this series. Steyn is just quicker and can ping batsman, but as far as their accuracy and ability to seam/swing the ball - they're equal.

Pretty sure the difference between them is their results, speed and other attributes not the point here.

I was 50/50 on Strauss going after last winter but now I don't think he can go in the short term. There are just too many problems in the rest of the team to get rid of the captain even if he is ****. Generally he bats well in India and if he can get past Zaheer he should do well.
Don't really subscribe to this one. I think the time for a regen phase has come, there is less to lose now, and you have got to blood the youngsters in the subcon. Why try and rebuild a young team with an ageing captain who's past his best? I think Cook's time has come, especially as he's already shown v.promising odi results. Look at the dramatic difference in oz test performance when Ponting finally handed over to Clarke. Eng can't really do any worse with youngsters than their old timers have done over there lately.. Plus don't forget Strauss averages 40, and has been well down in the 30's the last few years. While not terrible, it wouldn't be an irreplaceable loss by any means.

P.s. The secret to Philander is he keeps the seam so straight, it not only decks in either direction but consistently swings After pitching more so than before. I'm not sure I know of any other bowler who's that sneaky

Silly objective things like wickets don't count I presume then

England have 9 Tests before the Ashes next year (4 in India, 3 in NZ and 2 at home to NZ), considering their upcoming opponents is it time to move in a new direction with Cook at the helm?

India isn't the proving ground it once was and New Zealand probably have the easiest pitches one could ask to bat on when starting a career.

Tell Pietersen you can do without him, Strauss will probably go of his own accord anyway tbf.

People keep talking about South Africa playing away here but the truth is they've always been excellent in England, foreign conditions or not. Its at home where they historically struggle
or Durban in particular.

Pulled from the top of my head, recent trend:

- Draw in Centurion, draw in Johannesburg, win in Cape Town, lose badly in Durban. Losing in Durban in short series is not good.

Shame if it is the case that these two won't play until 2015. Particularly when the last two series have been cut from five to four and now four to three. Next cut from three to two?

I expect England to win this one now. SA can't win this from here, it is either a loss for them or a Draw.
Am I missing something or in all the excitement did noone call troll on this guy, and thought he was for real despite the tendulkar-like post count.
