Kevin Pietersen Retires From ODIs and T20Is

I sympathize with both the ECB and Pietersen on this. The ECB is obviously not going to allow its players to dictate what format they would like to play and what times during the year they would like to play international cricket vs the IPL. The problem is simply the grueling schedule that the modern cricketer is subject to and there is definitely a case for an IPL window. I don't care much for ODIs, but Pietersen is obviously a big loss for T20Is and the ECB could perhaps have done a better job negotiating with him to ensure that he would at least play till the end of the upcoming T20 world cup especially since we are reigning champs.

From Pietersen's standpoint, I can see why he would choose to spend less time on the international schedule. He's has vented his frustrated on this for a while. I think in the long run it is a good thing for England as it will (hopefully) allow him to perhaps spend some more time honing his test match game by playing FC cricket for Surrey. I've always believed that the reason for Pietersen's career tailing away the way that it has is because of the lack of sufficient match practice and I hope this decision will allow him to use CC to get himself into 5 day mode whenever he represents England.

Well seems fairly ridiculous that he can't play Twenty20, have no problem with his decison actually, always gets a lot of **** because of who he is.

Agree, it's a bit ridiculous they can't work this out especially as they did so for Strauss , I know he never came out and said he wasn't available to play Twenty20's but it was pretty much a given.

With the amount of cricket he's played since he's arrived on the international scene and was on the cards to play over the next few years, surely there's room for flexibility. Would other countries have reacted so all or nothing about their star players, I don't reckon they would.

This is just a massive middle finger to the ecb. I bet the fine over the Nick Knight tweet played a role as well.

If he pumps in the performances in Test Cricket then i'm not bothered.

Kevin Pietersen did return in time for England's first Test against West Indies but if his Twitter account was a true reflection, his thoughts were often elsewhere. Playing for Surrey in a championship match at Worcester ahead of the first Test, he got out as Surrey successfully fought to save the game, and tweeted not about the sterling efforts of his county colleagues in the match he was playing in, but excitedly about Delhi Daredevils' next match. Get used to it, is Pietersen's response.

Er, no. It's a domestic competition, end of discussion. Next thing you know, they'll be trying to ban guys who play in rival 2020 competitions. Oh hang on ....

For me he's a much better Test Match batsman than a one day batsman (T20 and 50 overs).

I really would be surprised if he went after the Ashes down under. As Atherton just said, Test Cricket is still the pinnacle, it's how you prove yourself as a cricketer.

I don't know, he's obviously been poor in 50 overs stuff for a couple of years but I reckon he's equally as good across all the formats, especially Tests & T20, the signs were though that he'd rediscovered his 50 over batting as well, which makes this all the more frustrating.

He's always said Test cricket is the pinnacle and he obviously loves it and now without playing the other formats for England Tests is all he's got to showcase his talents on the international stage.

He could atleast wait till this T20 WC, still it's not making sense. Only thing I can make out is it's a result of pure frustration
