my mistake about Aus. But he did ok.15 wickets at 29.53 is ok. Given it was for the most part good conditions for bowling, even with the lack of support, this was only ok.
If praveen was 5mph quicker and did the same things with the ball as he does now then he would be a world class cricketer. but he's not and he won't be
Fair judgement to make, but I do not think you can fault his performance against England. It was exceptional. Having no support at the other end is an extremely damaging thing for a bowler's performance. The lack of time spent bowling to the tail, the majority of the time being spent against batsmen who have scored at five runs per over against your teammates.
Ok how about he can't get into the current Surrey team. That should dent his chances of making an England or England Lions team.
Im suprised you guys don't want Masters, Murtagh and every other solid county pro with a few wickets to his name in the second division straight into the test team. I mean how many wickets did Jimmy Anderson even take last year in county cricket?
Realistically, he will not play for England. He is not highly rated among selectors. However, this does not prevent a chance of playing, for one. Meaker was not a regular in the Surrey OD team and he played ODI cricket. Jimmy Anderson played two county matches and took 5 wickets. If he would play a whole county season, he would take plenty of wickets.
Linley took more than a 'few wickets to his name' last season. 73 wickets at 18.34 is bloody outstanding. It was one season. I don't think he should be immediately called up to the Test team or anything rash like that. I just think he is one who should have earned an England Lions call up through such a great performance; through outperforming other England bowlers like Dernbach, Meaker and (I'm not sure he played much) Tremlett.
However, you're right, Linley is just an arbitrary example, I think Masters or Murtagh would do well if they played Test cricket. If England want to opt for bowlers like Finn, with more pace and less experience, that is fine. But I think Masters, Murtagh or Linley would do as well, at least in England. Perhaps more pace will work abroad, but it isn't like the England quicks are reverse swing masters or anything.
I think success to Darren Sammy and Shane Watson bowling at little more than 75mph at times (perhaps Watson is more toward 82mph) in Test cricket shows you do not have to be rapid to pick up Test wickets. They have not been consistent, but then it cannot be said that they are the top medium-fast bowlers in the world.
