I was going to use Praveen in my post earlier as an example but then deleted it. Here was a player who could move it round corners both ways seemingly at ease. And yet at 77mph he did ok in ideal conditions. Next tour india goto Australia and Kumar is on the sidelines for the whole tour, dropped. England have to pick out players for an international career rather than on the basis of statistics for one season.
He did better than okay and had no support at all! I'm pretty sure he was injured for Australia too.

The fact is that Linley is 30, yet took 2/3 of all his first class wickets last season, bowls at medium pace, and can't tell which end of the bat to hold.

I agree Meaker is more likely to play test cricket than Dernbach but both are rightly a long way ahead of Linley in the line for England.
Linley is much quicker than medium pace. This is a misconception that might hurt him but his 'lack of pace' will not be an issue, I'm sure of it.

my mistake about Aus. But he did ok.15 wickets at 29.53 is ok. Given it was for the most part good conditions for bowling, even with the lack of support, this was only ok.

If praveen was 5mph quicker and did the same things with the ball as he does now then he would be a world class cricketer. but he's not and he won't be

Ok how about he can't get into the current Surrey team. That should dent his chances of making an England or England Lions team.

Im suprised you guys don't want Masters, Murtagh and every other solid county pro with a few wickets to his name in the second division straight into the test team. I mean how many wickets did Jimmy Anderson even take last year in county cricket?

I'd have no worries selecting Richardson for the Windies. With the current UK weather I have few doubts he'd take a bagful. If we want to rest Jimmeh or Broad hasn't fully recovered he'd do a grand job.

Big prob (non-batting aside) would come if the selectors then felt obliged to keep faith if we get a warmer summer.

Fair judgement to make, but I do not think you can fault his performance against England. It was exceptional. Having no support at the other end is an extremely damaging thing for a bowler's performance. The lack of time spent bowling to the tail, the majority of the time being spent against batsmen who have scored at five runs per over against your teammates.

Realistically, he will not play for England. He is not highly rated among selectors. However, this does not prevent a chance of playing, for one. Meaker was not a regular in the Surrey OD team and he played ODI cricket. Jimmy Anderson played two county matches and took 5 wickets. If he would play a whole county season, he would take plenty of wickets.

Linley took more than a 'few wickets to his name' last season. 73 wickets at 18.34 is bloody outstanding. It was one season. I don't think he should be immediately called up to the Test team or anything rash like that. I just think he is one who should have earned an England Lions call up through such a great performance; through outperforming other England bowlers like Dernbach, Meaker and (I'm not sure he played much) Tremlett.

However, you're right, Linley is just an arbitrary example, I think Masters or Murtagh would do well if they played Test cricket. If England want to opt for bowlers like Finn, with more pace and less experience, that is fine. But I think Masters, Murtagh or Linley would do as well, at least in England. Perhaps more pace will work abroad, but it isn't like the England quicks are reverse swing masters or anything.

I think success to Darren Sammy and Shane Watson bowling at little more than 75mph at times (perhaps Watson is more toward 82mph) in Test cricket shows you do not have to be rapid to pick up Test wickets. They have not been consistent, but then it cannot be said that they are the top medium-fast bowlers in the world.

I hope the rain stops, it is getting a little silly now.

That's day 3 washed out as well then at Slurrey. Figures. Would have been the second full day of play if they'd been up here.

Can trump that. Was planning to watch it, but dozed off after two and a half beers and woke up on couch at 2am.

Meanwhile, on Dernbach: I still think his primary use is going to be death overs in ODIs for England. Has some decent variations with his myriad of slower balls and I suspect that in the longer format without the imperative to score so quickly he won't be anywhere near as effective.

& on Ravi: there was a similar assumption he'd get the test gig this time last year and Morgan carried the day with his Loins ton. If Carberry or Compton do similar this time it's maybe not yet set in stone.
I don't think that's quite the same though. The selectors were always going to go with Morgan IMO, since he was the backup batsmen in the Ashes. Don't quite know why all the media thought it would be Bopara tbh.

That would be a truly pointless pick - the sort we often got in the 70s, and sometimes since then.

If the conditions suggest he could take a bagful then so could quite a few others.

Pick on talent, sometimes potential, but NEVER County form and ABSOLUTELY NEVER someone described as "a good County pro".

I recall many what I call 'Headingley picks' - the likes of Watkin, Mallender, Mike Smith, Jon Lewis and others who could look superb under the cloud at Leeds but put them on an average Test pitch on a sunny day and they'd be quickly found out.

Dernbach could well become a decent ODI bowler. Meaker might well get in the Test match mix at some point - he's just finding his game at County level.

I would very much like if England never picked on County form ever again, just ftr

I am not for a second advocating the actual selection of Richardson, but it's unfair to dismiss his chances of achieving anything at present based on the "journeyman" label that has become attached to him. Martin Bicknell didn't do too badly when someone finally picked him, did he? Philander's hardly express, either...

He's single-handedly kept his side in the division once already, and is excelling again this time around.

Define "talent" for me and then we'll decide whether we should let it influence who we select. I'd prefer to think about picking the batsmen who'll score the most runs and the bowlers who'll take the most wickets.

Bicknell should actually have been in the pace bowler's mix for England for several years but initially Surrey put him on a stupid training programme which held him back when young and possibly harmed his later career as well. England then picked him in the 1993 Ashes series and all he looked much better than several seamers picked around thaat time (the likes of McCague and Illott:wacko:) I suspect he got lumped in with them and left out for far too long.

I heard a very good definition of 'class' recently which applied pretty well to talent.

Something that's hard to define but when you see it, you know immediately.

Yeah but if the game we're playing is actually under the cloud at Leeds, I'd be happy to pick someone who's going to look superb.

And Watkin is a good example. He was picked for his debut at Leeds against a strong Windies team and did the business - his performance was instrumental in a monumental win for England. His wickets were Haynes, Hooper, Richards, Logie and Dujon.

And yes, Mallender's another. He too was picked for his debut at Leeds against a strong Pakistani team and he too did the business. His 8 wickets were instrumental in another terrific win for England.

Richardson did go on one Lions tour.

Hey, an early start for you today mate. Up to walk the dog or something? I hope the Durham lads have enjoyed their trip to London, not a cat in hell's chance of any play today. The Gloucs match looks like going the same way.

Somerset at the Oval (on Sky) on Friday though. So the pub will be given a miss - if it's stopped raining by then.
