It's all about the pressure that Herath creates. Very few batsman in the current era have the capacity to withstand a complete over of wicket-to-wicket bowling. He simply doesn't stop applying pressure, and eventually the ill judged stroke square of the wicket results in the lbw/bowled/edge.

I love how the best spinner in the world and the best fast bowler in the world are the truest examples of keeping bowling simple.

Panesar a better bowler than Patel, surely?
Yes, but at some point you have to say Monty's fielding isn't good enough. I do feel sorry for him because by all accounts he's worked pretty hard at it, and I did hope he'd not be so bad this time around. Monty's not that good a bowler that things like this can be ignored forever.

Yes true, but neither is the other bloke tbh. I mean, Panesar looks at least up to it in terms of one if the disciplines. I know it's only the other lad's first game and it's hard to judge, but, well.. Just no, frankly, it seems.

Patel's a batsman who bowls a bit as far as I understand it. It's not really relevant to Monty's place in the team in the long run. Monty has to hold his place vs. Bresnan/Finn, Patel vs. Bopara/AN Other.

This. And it worked beautifully against england because the England batsmen got frustrated just because the runs were drying up... so they just tried to hit out by sweeping, instead of sticking it out and waiting for a bad ball which is what someone like a Dravid would have done... nonsense shots, caused due to mental frailness imo

Hmm right so according to the last 2-3 pages bowling straight is now enough to make you a really good spinner?

England's dismissals were ****ing atrocious. There's no polite way of putting it. Out on the sweep what 5-6 times in the match? How is that acceptable? A similar number who've just knocked or edged it to the infield. Any other time you'd be worried about your batsmen getting out with their feet stuck in cement but England have superseded that with some simply stupendous feats of ****wittery. I couldn't give a toss about Sri Lanka, they were a rubbish side before the series and they'll be a rubbish one after. England's batting has been absolutely PATHETIC. That's what decided the games in these last four Test matches. In a bowler's game they've managed to trump it with batting that would shame the revolving door England sides of the 90s.

You got to get out somehow. What's worse, out sweeping which despite the 5 wickets brought runs or get out like Strauss or KP, who danced down the wicket and played nothing shots?

Nice to see that the pollyanna post-mortem is honing in on the key talking points with laser-like precision:

TP1. Debutant Samit Patel - is he worth his place in the team?
TP2. Monty's match-losing fielding - can it be allowed to continue?

Could I suggest, not an additional talking point - who am I to make so bold? -, but a post-debate vote of thanks to the real heroes of the hour, along the following lines:

"Three cheers for our middle order stalwarts Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen. Without their tough runs - in first and second innings respectively -, this disappointing defeat.... would have been even worse!"

Nice try CWB - You are wrong on Bell, again.

For the match only Jayawardene x2 and Trott scored on aggregate more runs.

Then he definitely should go

Using your feet and playing straight is a better % play than sweeping all the time IMO.
