*Official* Second Test at Trent Bridge

Was that partly due to the generosity/sportsmanship of the Aussies or is it a hard and fast rule?
I don't see what you're getting at here. If we lost the toss we'd have picked Ambrose in the starting 11 even though he wasn't at the ground and then would have had Colly keeping until he arrived.

iirc we were also thinking of selecting the wicket keeping coach to play the match. Prior's back was good enough so it was all a moot point.

I think we were entitled to start with a sub fielder anyway; even if not, we had allowed them a last minute change at Edgbaston earlier in the series and I imagine the favour would have been returned.

Yeah, what are the rules though? Pretty sure we could name someone else, have Trott open and have the other guy bat lower down the order. Think we were going to try and do a similar thing when we had Tim Ambrose on standby for the 4th Ashes Test a couple of years back (Test was abandoned without a ball bowled in the end, FTR).
Yeah, that's exactly what we would do and there'd be absolutely nothing wrong with it.

If we were then put into field then I'd hope the opposition would agree to a temporary sub fielder (seeing as we've done similar in the past when late injuries have happened) - but if they didn't then it'd just make beating them all the more sweet.

WRT all this, I'd imagine they have an emergency back-up in case of injury to a batsman.

Would probably grab Alex Hales for this test eg.

Edit: But he's playing a county match so maybe not.

Still don't see what's wrong with "Strauss Trott Pietersen Bell Morgan Prior Bresnan Broad Swann Tremlett Anderson" if necessary.

It's a bit like when Saha played as a specialist batsman. Yeah it's not god-awful but it's not really anything like what would've been selected with everyone to choose from. No matter how you shuffle the batting order to make it look better, Bresnan in for Cook does substantially weaker the batting.

Sure, I just meant in an emergency it ought to be okay. I think it's what we did in Bangladesh when we needed five bowlers (obv it was Strauss missing then) and I don't think it's the worst idea to do it again if we need to (again, obv would be Morgan to miss out).

Hard to see how India will come back after the whopping in the first match. But then again, it was hard to see how they would come back after they lost by an innings in Johannesburg, and they came back to draw the series.

It might swing at Trent Bridge but Tendulkar averages 78.60 there and Dravid 53.60.

Well I would imagine Morgan may make way for Samit Patel this winter in Sri Lanka to give us 2 spinners. Not sure about the pitches we will play Pakistan on.

Why are England not playing any tests in India when they come over in the next few months? Would have been fun to have back to back series.

since he mentioned DRS..did any one notice the following

We have only 5 cameras in the whole world which is used as part of the DRS. And four are being used here in England ..so the next series to start the SL vs Aus will not have DRS till the tests starts !!!!

what would happen if there are 2 test matches going on at same time... only one will have DRS and other will not have one
