Preview and Post-Match Analysis of India vs. West Indies 2011
1st ODI - India Performance Analysis

As predicted, India came out of this encounter victorious, despite a valiant effort by the West Indies. India's bowling definitely trumped their batting. They were able to asphyxiate the opposing batsmen right from the start of the innings and when they did accelerate in the middle overs, India's bowling at the death pulled it back. The last 5 overs of the Windies innings only yielded 23 runs with the loss of 3 wickets. Only one boundary was scored, that too a streaky one off the last ball. Raina's captaincy was also commendable, bringing himself o for the penultimate over instead of Munaf. Even though Munaf had bee expensive, he was probably the safer option. To his credit, Raina got it right, and who knows? Maybe that decision saved India 6 or 7 runs.
Praveen Kumar was fabolous with the ball. After a sloppy first over, he never looked back and was the instigator of the asphyxiation referred to above. Mishra was economical but thats about it. Bhaji was very impressive, taking three key wickets. It's no coincidence that when he was taken off West Indie's scoring rate increased.
Yusuf Pathan bowled poorly on a slow surface. As a golden rule, if you encounter a slow surface, you should never bowl short because it allows the batsmen a lot of time to rock onto the back foot and have his way with the ball. This was evidenced by the fact that both of the boundaries that Pathan conceded in his first over were long-hops. He was also poor with the bat, failing to see India through the finish line. Bear in mind he could have been out earlier had Anthony Martin held onto a simple cuaght-and-bowled chance.
Dhawan showed a lot of anxiety during his half-century, running out Parthiv and getting himself and Badri into sticky situations at times. He also seemed tentative at times and scored slowly and when he did try to break the shackles after reach his 50, he holed out in the deep. However, his innings was still promising as he held fort even though wickets were falling around him. He played decently under pressure and will definitely be better for the the time he spent out in the middle. Hopefully he can build on this in the next few games.
Rohit Sharma played a risk-free, controlled knock. He paced his innings perfectly, nudging the ball around for the first half of his innings and the stepping on the accelerator. Event hough he did his India prospects no harm, it must be remembered that he wasn't facing the most terrifying bowling attack. I would be interesting to see how he would perform if Jerome Taylor or Fidel Edwards played. Regardless, he deserved the man-of-the-match award for his calm knock.
