*Official* - India in West Indies

If Rohit Sharma cbf building a proper ODI innings, he should be asked to open and go for it from ball one or he should play at 6 as a slogger. Raina should bat at 3 since there is no bounce.

Still have doubts about Kohli on such low paced, turning tracks with the ball hard to get away tbh.
He like Nohit prefers the ball to come on to him quicker.

Very interested to see how he does this tour if the pitches remain like this throughout the tour.
Raina is the one who i would back on such pitches.
I don't think his dismissal had anything to do with the slow, low nature of the pitch, just got out chasing a wide one. Poor shot. Also he has made most of his ODI runs in India and Bangladesh where the tracks are predominantly on the slower side and assist spin more than other places.

Wait til the end of the series and judge Rohit (and Dhawan) at the end I reckon.

It's hard to look good on that type of wicket imo. But PEWS and Cevno are right, it wasn't a great knock from Rohit, and I'm a big fan of his.

At the end of the day though, he led them to victory and experiences like that are invaluable.

Sounds good to me.

Give Dhawan the series. He hasn't had anywhere near the opportunities as the other players have had.

I am far from sold on him, but he should get 4-5 matches.

I'd just roll with what was picked today. The only change I'd consider would be Kohli opening and Saha coming in for Patel at around 7. I wouldn't bat Sharma or Raina in the top three tbh.

Agreed.

There's no point batting them in the top 3 because they aren't going to bat in the top 3 for India for a while. Let them master the middle order. Sehwag, Gambhir and Kohli have that locked down for a while. And you also have Mukund later in the series to bat there.

I thought Raina could do well in the role he has in the IPL, batting up the order and giving him a chance to build an innings. But that is a shortened format, and he does the finisher role great in ODIs (where he typically comes in with less than 15 overs to go), so you could kind of equate the two and keep things unchanged.

even if Rohit makes it big I can see him being knocked over early a few times, looks absolutely village when he starts could be this era's Mark Waugh.

Preview and Post-Match Analysis of India vs. West Indies 2011

1st ODI - India Performance Analysis

Source: CozyCricket - Jayesh D's thoughts on the game
As predicted, India came out of this encounter victorious, despite a valiant effort by the West Indies. India's bowling definitely trumped their batting. They were able to asphyxiate the opposing batsmen right from the start of the innings and when they did accelerate in the middle overs, India's bowling at the death pulled it back. The last 5 overs of the Windies innings only yielded 23 runs with the loss of 3 wickets. Only one boundary was scored, that too a streaky one off the last ball. Raina's captaincy was also commendable, bringing himself o for the penultimate over instead of Munaf. Even though Munaf had bee expensive, he was probably the safer option. To his credit, Raina got it right, and who knows? Maybe that decision saved India 6 or 7 runs.

Praveen Kumar was fabolous with the ball. After a sloppy first over, he never looked back and was the instigator of the asphyxiation referred to above. Mishra was economical but thats about it. Bhaji was very impressive, taking three key wickets. It's no coincidence that when he was taken off West Indie's scoring rate increased.

Yusuf Pathan bowled poorly on a slow surface. As a golden rule, if you encounter a slow surface, you should never bowl short because it allows the batsmen a lot of time to rock onto the back foot and have his way with the ball. This was evidenced by the fact that both of the boundaries that Pathan conceded in his first over were long-hops. He was also poor with the bat, failing to see India through the finish line. Bear in mind he could have been out earlier had Anthony Martin held onto a simple cuaght-and-bowled chance.

Dhawan showed a lot of anxiety during his half-century, running out Parthiv and getting himself and Badri into sticky situations at times. He also seemed tentative at times and scored slowly and when he did try to break the shackles after reach his 50, he holed out in the deep. However, his innings was still promising as he held fort even though wickets were falling around him. He played decently under pressure and will definitely be better for the the time he spent out in the middle. Hopefully he can build on this in the next few games.

Rohit Sharma played a risk-free, controlled knock. He paced his innings perfectly, nudging the ball around for the first half of his innings and the stepping on the accelerator. Event hough he did his India prospects no harm, it must be remembered that he wasn't facing the most terrifying bowling attack. I would be interesting to see how he would perform if Jerome Taylor or Fidel Edwards played. Regardless, he deserved the man-of-the-match award for his calm knock.

Yeah it was an average knock tbh. He batted like an absolute moron for the first part of his innings, was out plumb not given and was then nonsensically allowed to milk hopelessly unthreatening bowling around for singles with the field back until he was set.

I know, but he stuck around and uncharacterastically didn't throw it away. Also the pitch was a little demanding.
I value grit and fight in an innings highly,i rate ponting 100 in qf over 140.
So i thought it was a pretty good innings.Especially since he's making a comeback with pressure on him.

Dhawan has an ugly technique, not impressed at all.Won't last long.
Dhawan definitely started really scratchy but I think the time he spent out in the middle in the first game will serve him well. He also played well towards the end of this years IPL. I think its worth sticking with him and he could prove to be a useful back up for Gambhir. Maybe your right and he won't lat long but I think we should give him a chance.
