Xavi Alonso was better at CM than Gerrard was.

Or rather, the team was always better with Alonso at CM than it was with Gerrard there. Which is almost the same thing.

There aren't many players like the '01-'02~ Gerrard around anymore. Central midfield roles tend to be a little more well-defined than they were.
It's not almost the same thing, though, is it.

Because if at CM Gerrard = Alonso but in AM Gerrard > Alonso, then it's better for the team if Alonso plays CM. Or even if Gerrard > Alonso at CM but Gerrard >> Alonso at AM, then it's still better for the team if Alonso plays the CM role.

It all comes back to what Ikki and I have both said - Gerrard is more versatile than pretty much every midfielder he teams with, for club and country, hence why he is the guy most likely to be moved around.

I haven't seen much of Alonso since he left Liverpool, not enough to judge anyway but I'd imagine he's been playing better than Gerrard. However, I don't think there was a single season where you could say Alonso outperformed Gerrard at Liverpool; Alonso's two best seasons were even better ones for Gerrard.

BTW, I know I'm like a year late in asking this but what's the reason in the Cup Final happening before the final league games this season?

Thought they decided it was a turd idea after the 01/02 seasons S

Would make sense.

Am still spitting about the play-off finals being moved. Stick your ****ty European competition IMO.

Not that we were anywhere near the play-offs, but.

UEFA don't allow games to be played in the 2 weeks prior to the Champions League final.

What is that supposed to mean?

Btw,Congrats.

Hopefully you guys get knocked out in the qualifier though.:p
Rag is a term Man City fans have coined for man United fans. Basically City for the first part of the 20th century were the bigger team in Manchester. United were poor. Have seen two plausible stories for the name. One being that the kits looked like rags as a result of finances so the Utd fans called themselves rags. Another that Man City loaned United kits because we couldn't afford our own.

The Liverpool team has suffered more sans Alonso than it does sans Gerrard. Remove Alonso (their only truly major loss that summer) and Liverpool went from 86 points and 2nd to 63 points and 7th. Meanwhile by far their best run of this season has come when Gerrard has been absent. Personally, I don't find the fact that in recent times Liverpool have suffered more without Alonso than without Gerrard very coincidental.

How come you hate Everton more than Liverpool? Family, or you find their fans worse?
Yeah, it's a bit of both actually. Some of my mates hate Liverpool more but I've never had a huge beef with them as the old man is a red. Some of their fans are ****s as well but on derby day I always find it's blues causing trouble, though I do have good mates and a brother who are blue****e.

There was also the Peter Johnson and Steve Simonsen sagas in the 90s
