Southee now the equal highest scorer. Ryder's run out was the turning point of the day. Had he stayed we might well have only finished 4 down. Honour definately belong to Pakistan, as it's definately still a 400+ pitch.
Agreed, however if NZ can somehow squeeze out another 80-90 runs & get 350ish, they won't be far away form equality. Overall, a crap-*** day though with only the lower-order saving some face in the end.

BTW what's all this stuff about ball tampering? Just heard doull say something along that line though I don't take him seriously.

When Gul was bowling he was hiding the ball on his run up and everyone assumed he was just trying to hide what type of delivery he was going to bowl but superb camera-work showed that he was actually using his thumb to dig and scratch at the seam.

Was very clever and sneaky.

Did the 3rd umpire pick up on it and get the on field umpires to replace the ball?

Jeez. They showed the ball and it did look far worse than a <80 over ball.

I was impressed with Guptill today. That's the most application he's shown at this level and he didn't panic when the spinner tied him down. He got out in dire fashion but credit to him, he was solid and he scored some runs.

He really does have a habit of saving his best innings for when the calls for his dropping are about to begin.

Completely disagree. Well maybe not completely. But he let the spinner get on top of him completely, utterly failed to turn the strike over, and wound up panicking and tossing his wicket away at a vital time. When you remove the runs he scored in boundaries, he managed just 18 runs off 156 balls. The kid has issues.

Would you rather he got out for 30 (that was where he was stalled) than 50?

He needs to work on turning the strike over against tight spin bowling, but he couldn't manage it in this instance, so he sat on the bowler and bided his time. Would you rather he just threw it away after a couple of overs like he normally does?

I don't really care how many of his runs came in boundaries. Our batting collapsed, and he got some runs. Yes, he needs to work on strike rotation and yes he got out in dire fashion, but I'll take the runs he scored and he deserves credit for scoring them. I didn't think he would have the patience.

I don't think it's clear he got out panicking either. Sometimes full tosses simply take batsmen by surprise and they don't place their shot. It happens.

No, I'd rather he had the capacity to get singles. He allowed Rehman to settle into a good line and length and then was completely dominated. For me, the longer you spend at the crease the more comfortable you should get. The complete opposite happened with Guptill. And while he deserves credit for making runs, it was probably his dismissal, more than Ryders, that exposed the lower order and triggered the collapse. Given that he had an unwitting hand in Ryder's demise (although obviously he had no fault in the dismissal) it really was his job to bat the rest of the day and make a hundred.

And he was definately panicking. He was clearly desperate to hit some runs, and you could actually see him beginning to shuffle down the pitch to the wicket ball which meant it reached him higher up making it harder to hit. But he was so desperate to break the deadlock against Rehman that he went through with it anyway and wound up playing a complete prick of a shot. To pass it off as bad luck is giving him way too much credit.

Agreed, needs to think something other than 'block/boundary' & needs to be taught the concept of soft-hands. Such a naturally gifted striker of the ball, yet so utterly one-dimensional at the moment

Yes I would too, but he doesn't have that atm. He did better than I thought he would with the assets he has, showed application and stickability (because normally Guptill would have thrown it away after being tied down for two overs), and got a fifty.

Me being happy he showed some fight and got to fifty does not mean I think it's good his strike rotation is below par.

Fully agree here, wasn't a good knock but it did show that he's learning and obviously putting effort into sticking it out through the tough times. Now if he's able to develop strike rotation he will be fantastic for us

AWTA. He showed good application and his ability to rotate the strike will only get better with more time at the crease. He was looking better towards the end of his innings as well and was just surprised with the high full toss tbh.
