Well extra pace is like technology in movies.

CGI is used by both Michael Bay and Christopher Nolan but while Nolan comes up with Inception, Michael Bay comes up with Transformers 2.

It is an advantage if you have the skill to use it.

Richard Hadlee was a match winning bowler without express pace.
But blokes like Michael Holding, Imran Khan were match winning bowlers because of their extra yard of pace.

It all depends on how you use it

Megan Fox in Transformers 2 was largely CGI as well. 8-)

Speed is just one possible tool for a quality bowler to use, it shouldn't be the be all and end all of NZ bowling debates.
I don't think it is the be all and end all as seen in people like Andy Mckay who didn't even have real speed. I think its played on NZ supporters minds more than some other factors simply because there are guys like Michael Mason, Brent Arnel running around the domestic scene. They aren't particular quick...128-133km and they make domestic batsmen look like bunnies because they also have excellent control yet they get spanked on the international level.

Mason wouldn't have gotten spanked at international level IMO if his cards fell another way that would have got him more international chances. Arnel doesn't have that great a domestic record

He's only played three test matches all of which were played on absolute roads against two of the best teams in test match cricket. Let's give him a chance shell we?

Just as long as we have someone who can clock up a decent speed instead of 3 floating around 125-135.

I always thought Southee could push 140 consistently but he hasn't improved his pace much or at all really.
Yeah I still think he can and will but his endurance hasn't built too much. That said when did he last play in conditions he enjoys?
