BBC Sport - Football - Blackburn 0-0 Sunderland

"Referee Lee Probert, having consulted his linesman, correctly applied the letter of the law in dismissing the giant Samba, and was also right to award a free-kick on the edge of the area where the first contact was made"

It's reading stuff like this that makes me wonder. First contact implies the foul continued into the box - I've not seen it myself but presumably someone has. I dunno if the red card complicates things, but I'm sure there are plenty of other examples without that complication anyway.
If someone commits an offence worthy of a red card then you can't let the game run and then go and send them off as soon as there's a break in play - the game has to be stopped immediately, and the player in question dismissed.

I know what you mean, but really, it is, because Liverpool are now in the relegation zone. This is unheralded for a generation of their supporters.
All that shows is that Liverpool have had a woeful start to the season - which is magnified by there being no previous good form to pull them up the table.

For a club with Liverpool's expectations, finishing 10th is really no better than scraping 17th.

Yeah agreed, though in theory there is no real difference in practicle terms, but as Ausage has just said, in reality I can't imagine a lot of fans would be just as happy just managing to avoid relegation as they would if their team finished somewhere halfway up the table, even if the difference in terms of achievement in any tangible sense isn't a great deal different.

I wonder whether Fergie will play Rooney any more this season after the bridges have been burned so spectacularly. I still can't get my head around this.

I am genuinely shocked. I thought it was all idle rumour. Rooney could have gone down in the same esteem as the likes of Giggs and Scholes. I can only see his career going downhill from here.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didnt United buy him from the club that bred him

Full respect to Sir Alex for his candour, but it is a little surprising to my way of thinking. Confirming what was widely reported must've weakened ManUre's bargaining position somewhat. Other clubs now know their prime asset won't sign another contract and, with only 18 months left on his current deal, his price will be adjusted downward accordingly.

Only one destination tho for my quid: Citeh.

Liverpool must be a decent outside bet - he won't be a popular lad whichever way he turns
Depends how he feels about playing in the Championship next year, I suppose.

Agreed that City must be favourites - I don't see Colleen fancying life overseas.

Was very surprised by that press conference today, Rooney by all accounts is adamant that he wants to leave, wonder what has brought all this on, is the temptation of the pound too much to refuse ? More realistically may be the fact he does not see Utd progressing in the direction he hoped they would, no big signings of any note to push them closer to Chelsea, and with all the obvious off-field problems, perhaps the exit door should not come as big a surprise.

His form has been poor for some time now, but is obviously still an outstanding player, one I wouldn't say no to turning up at Eastlands!
