*Official* Australia in England

My guess would be that they are calculating speeds at different points after the release of the ball. I believe that the speed that the guns record is measured a split second after release, rather than at release; how soon after release may be the cause of divergence.
Cheers mate.I've noticed it a few times, but the wicket Anderson got on sky was 89mph and on cricinfo 84.9.

Aside from one spell against the Bangladesh tail, Swann has looked really average this summer

Can we plz wait till we actually lose the series before talk of Australia's demise? Sure it doesn't matter that we've been playing quality ODI cricket for the past year...

I'm so digging the 'Official Decline of Australia' thread on Sunday

I'm not saying it is your demise just that you aren't as good as you think you are.

Think your batting is arse about face though,White looks quality and should be going in earlier and Paine isn't good enough to open.
Our batting looks woeful... Paine isn't an opener and can't handle back foot play great. Ponting is giving his wicket away. Clarke, even when in form is a pretty average ODI player, is now out of form against short bowling (although he still does merrily against spin). That leaves Watto, White and Hussey...

PS. I've not been watching for the last two hours, busy watching Italy fail (yay!) - how's the pitch playing?

The batting doesn't come down to talent, it's more the mentality and game planning. Traditionally Australia have been more than happy plodding along in the middle overs before launching towards the end. However for at least 2-3 years that's failed, esp now with no Symonds. They're just not prepared to risk anything early on and play with a bit of flair which is fairly disappointing. I think there's a notion that ODI isn't Twenty20 cricket in the camp and it's been taken a bit too far.

TBH the problem is that we're failing in the 10-20 overs bit - sucks out all the momentum from the innings, makes us reliant on a Clarke to knock it around and make a 60-odd.

The problem is also that having knocked it around and gotten to 60-odd, and placed the team in a good position to launch... when we've done it, we've been fine (how many times were we saved by the batting PP vs. Pakistan?), but when we haven't, cf. two days ago, we've been underdone.

Your bowling's been good, your batting has underperformed though.

Our bowling on Thursday wasn't great - but then, that's mostly because Bollinger had an off-day as he really was the lynchpin of the attack. Harris was excellent, Hauritz respectable and Hazlewood as good as you could expect from a 19yo deubtant.

oh dear, had to listen to Vaughan followed by Stewart on the radio on the way home and now its Nick ****e on sky
Well below Sky standards. I don't think I've ever heard cheerleading like "HIT HIT HIT!!!" while a pom was going for a runout in the Sky box. Expect that from Nine, not Sky.

  • Strange innings from White. He always threatened to cut loose but in the end it was not that much.
  • Smith played well for a youngster with a calm mind. Early days though for him though
  • Well bowled Broad. I am impressed by the calmness on him and English selectors are treating him well.
  • I think barring something brilliant from Aussie bowlers, England should win this.

Thoughts from people who actually watched most of the innings? Is 240 defendable?
Have a feeling that it's a wicket that is a bit 2 paced but at the risk of stating the obvious but we'll know more when Eng have batted for 20 overs or so
