The TV Tuner card that I bought for this purpose is now effectively obsolete. ****.

Don't mind this development. Should be good fun watching it in the net. Provided my ****ty net service holds up.:p
Dude which brand you bought? cost? am planning to buy one for myself. i

Shri

Mr. Glass
Is it any good? I might be interesting in buying it off you actually, providing you really do have no use for it of course, because mine is getting a bit old now and I reckon I'd get much higher quality from anything I bought now.
The manufacture date says Feb 2009. New enough?

How will the foreign base change over the duration of the IPL? Three phases seem to exist- the initial phase with Lankans, Saffies and retirees, then the coming of the West Indians, then the coming of the Aussies, English and possibly Kiwis, then the exit of the players from those teams. This is done keeping in mind the overseas players won't choose IPL over their local league games. Here's an estimate-

Chennai can start with Hayden, Justin Kemp, Muralitharan and Albie Morkel, which will be largely constant. Once Flintoff is available, even briefly, he'll replace Morkel. I doubt if there's a place for Thushara or Thissara, since both lack striking power.

Deccan can start with Gilchrist, Symonds, Dwayne Smith and possibly Vaas. Once the West Indians are available, Vaas will make way for Roach. Fidel may not get a game this season.

Bangalore can largely play all four South Africans Kallis, Boucher, Roelof and Steyn. For that brief period Bracken is available, Steyn makes way. We don't know how much of the tournament the Kiwis will get, but recent signing Morgan may make it ahead of Kallis for the games he gets.

Kolkata, oh well, have so many overseas stars, that fitting them together is a tight one. They can start with Matthews, Bond and any two of Hodge, Hussey and Mendis. Once the West Indians arrive, Gayle will replace the batsman. Once the Aussies and Kiwis leave, you'll have Gayle, Matthews, Mendis and Bond.

Punjab, more or less an India A of the IPL, may play an overseas player less for most of the season. They'll have Sangakkara, Mahela, Abdulla and Pommersbach to start, and then briefly Brett Lee will come. Eventually, if Jerome Taylor is available, he'll play all the matches after his arrival.

Delhi will largely stick to Dilshan, AB de Villiers, Nannes and Maharoof. Vettori may play a little in the middle. This may be a toss-up between Maharoof and Parnell.

Rajasthan were hampered heavily by the absence of Watson and Tanvir, with their replacements not quite up to the mark. This time, Smith, Mascarenhas, Martyn and Warne may get the whole season, until Dimi has to leave for England, following which, Morne Morkel plays.

Mumbai have made the biggest signing, getting Kieron Pollard. However, they have to wait for his team's series against Zimbabwe to end, likewise Bravo. Until then, they have Sanath, Duminy, Napier and Malinga. When the West Indians arrive, Duminy and Malinga make way. Once Napier leaves, Malinga returns.

It's been five days since we last checked in here. Let's look at Delhi Daredevils, one of the potential supply lines for the Indian team. Captaincy has been passed on to Gambhir, which is a good thing, given that he's also been captain of Delhi when he played for them lately. They will miss Vettori (tight, he may get a game or two) and McGrath (buying out his contract was a capital blunder) this season, but they can get a lot out of Dilshan, AB, Dirk Nannes and one of Maharoof and Parnell. They may go in for Maharoof because of his striking power lower down, but filling up domestic slots will be a task. Their wishlist will include a hard-hitting domestic batsman and a run-scoring domestic bowler.

They can buy out ex-ICL Delhi batsman Monish Mishra, who plays for Madhya Pradesh. He has a healthy average and a strike rate over 160 in four matches, so he's started well. They can also zero in on Abbas Ali, left-arm spinner for MP. He's primarily a batsman in the longer game, but has had success as a spinner in T20, and will fill the spot of the second spinner/#9 batsman for Delhi. Outside of the former ICL, they can chase Joginder Sharma (playing out of catchment), Praveen Kumar (catchment area player), Shadab Jakati (playing out of catchment), JT Billa (prospective IPL debut) and one of Akhil and Vinay from Bangalore. All of them are an upgrade over the current players Mithun Manhas and Rajat Bhatia/Pradeep Sangwan, though Yogesh Nagar isn't too bad.

This may be a prospective Delhi lineup-
  • Sehwag
  • Gambhir(C)
  • Dilshan
  • AB de Villiers
  • Dinesh Karthik (WK)
  • The domestic batsman- Manhas/Mishra
  • Maharoof (RMF)/Parnell (LFM)
  • Amit Mishra (LBG)
  • The domestic bowler - Abbas Ali (SLA)/JT Billa (RM)
  • Nehra (LFM)
  • Nannes (LF)
When they plug these gaps, they'll be a formidable team.

Nannes and Parnell with the new ball.

Top order of Sehwag, Gambhir, Dilshan and AB. :-O
Parnell's batting doesn't seem adequate. The only bowlers capable of batting will be Mishra, maybe Bhatia (but he'll scratch around for long) and by a long shot Sangwan and Yo Mahesh. Without a genuine all-rounder in the mix, and a soft spot below that mighty top four, they'll need bowlers who will add up the runs.

What happens to these players? These are Indian domestic players, who can do a lot for some teams, but are elsewhere and not doing much- and a few don't seem to fit the bill.
  • Ravi Ashwin- Offspinner who can bat, plays for TN, in the Chennai squad, but has got only one match and sent down only one over.
  • Joginder Sharma- India's last-over hero back in SA, competent T20 bowler and a decent lower-order batsman, now hardly a fixture for Chennai. He may come useful for Punjab or Delhi.
  • Sanjay Bangar- Useful T20 bowler, decent strike rate, offloaded by both Deccan and Kolkata- may come useful for Deccan this time as a bowler.
  • Wasim Jaffer- He's a hit in the SMAT, and has good T20 stats, and may challenge Uthappa for opening the batting.
  • Praveen Kumar- Delhi catchment area, useful T20 bowler, capable lower-order striker, but hardly gets an innings for BRC- can come useful for Delhi or Punjab.
  • Vinay Kumar- Barely gets a game for Bangalore, despite being a Ranji player from there. One of the better domestic seamers, with decent pace, good on the field, and can strike a few. Delhi can use one like him.
  • Bala Akhil- Likewise, but even fewer games. He's a better batsman, strikes harder, though not so much a bowler, and may be useful for Delhi.
  • Vinit Indulkar- Impressive batsman for HP, but hasn't got a game for Kolkata- may come useful for them, though Punjab may chase.
  • Laxmiratan Shukla- Kolkata's best domestic all-rounder, but often doesn't bowl. Decent stats otherwise.
  • Sachin Rana- In the Kolkata squad, but never got a game. Hard-hitting batsman and steady medium-pacer, he can be of use to Delhi or Deccan.
  • Ramesh Powar, Sreesanth, VRV Singh, Ishant, Dinda, Tyagi- Veterans or youngsters, all of them are T20 strugglers, though (often) regular fixtures in their teams.
  • Saurabh Tiwary- One of the former U-19 players from the World Cup winning team, he's one of those better suited for T20.
  • Pujara- One of India's bright young batting talents, but once offloaded by Kolkata, then injured for all of the next season, and little T20 experience, but made an impression.
  • Rahane, Vijay, Dhawan, Mukund- More of India's promising young batsmen, but not really cut out for T20, except Dhawan. All lack striking power, but are useful on the field.

Delhi shouldn't have let Dhawan go to bombay.... their batting lineup would be even more formidable.
