Group A: Sussex vs East Robbham Upper Body
Bighitting West Indian Dwayne Smith played an unusually reserved innings, hitting just 2 fours and a six in a matchwinning 47 from 36 balls. Behind his patient knock, Sussex reached 126-9 for a slim victory and a quarterfinal berth. The decisive ninth-wicket partnership featured James Kirtley in support of Smith, but when Upper Body captain Nath Patrick dismissed him for 21, 10 were still needed by the Sharks. Red veteran Dave Watt charged in to Smith in the following over, and was dispatched twice down the ground, first for four and then a six for the winning runs.
Upper Body were always in some difficulty after posting just 125-7. None of the batsmen really shifted into gear, as Shane Watson was the pick with his 28-ball 36. Luke Wright and Smith were excellent with their medium pace, and the latter started his Man of the Match show with 3 wickets, while Michael Yardy continued his good tournament with a tight spell of spin. But despite the low total, Upper Body started their defence well. Mat Mitchell darted the new ball around to snap up Nash and Joyce in his opening spell, and Wright fell to a top-edged pull at 17-3. CWer Martyn Corrin restored some credibility to the challenge with a quickfire 25, but as he departed the score slumped to 59-5. As Smith pushed on he steadily lost partners, until Kirtley proved worthy and played a good hand.

Group B: West Robbham Rabid Wolves vs Kings XI Punjab
Unlike their fellow CWers, West Robbham put in a confident and commanding batting performance to leapfrog Kings XI Punjab into second place, heading into the quarterfinal round. Ben Read and Kieron Pollard hit impressive fifties to power a total of 214-3 after Kev Gough chose to bat first. Read was beaten thrice successively to start his innings, but kicked into gear and hit some 11 boundaries in 61. But as in the last game, Pollard stole the headlines with his clean hitting, clearing the ropes 6 times in 82 unbeaten (40 balls). Amazingly enough, however, he did not dominate the partnership of 44 from 3.1 overs to finish the innings. Indeed Dan Rai picked 3 fours and 2 sixes in a Pathan over on his way to 34 from 14 balls.
Whatever challenge Kings XI Punjab would mount was all but ended when Yuvraj Singh lofted Dav Richards down the throat of long-on. Simon Katich tried his best with a counter-attacking 71, but Matt Smith set about the middle order and finished with a career-best haul of 4-20. The margin of 53 runs represented a crushing win as Rabid Wolves romp into the final 8.
