Where does Vettori rank all-time as an all-rounder?

It's unfortunate that Brad Hogg did not have a long career. If he was playing for any other country would have taken 350+ wickets and scored 4000+ runs. Warne and MacGill were better bowlers though, but in recent times (last 25 years) he's probably the best left arm spin bowler (although a chinaman).
Would have to disagree. Hogg with the white ball & red ball where two different bowlers TBF. I have read a few batsmen/posters (vic_orthodox a few years back) say that Hogg's variations are a lot harder to pick (specifically the wrong'un) with the white ball, because the contrast between the colours of the seam and the ball aren't as distinctive as with the red ball, so batsmen find him a lot easier to pick in FC cricket.

So i doubt seriously if he could have been an reached these spin-bowling all-rounder levels like Vettori. Especially given that he only really began to peak as bowler around 2003. He wasn't really dominant in domestic cricket.

may be you should read the thread and see how much time was devoted to what and then issue threats.

would they also take action against someone saying "vettori is the greatest spin bowling all rounder of all time" for the sheer stupidity of the statement?
Two things

1) I've read the thread, and it's about half an hour of my life I'll never get back
2) Do you have emoticons turned off, because clearly I wasn't being serious.

Harbhajan in the sub-continent, Vettori elsewhere. Actually, that's the answer to pretty much any Harbhajan vs. Spinner X question.

If you're looking at overall... I think you have to go for Harbhajan. He'll win you more matches.

Not in Oz - sad thing was that Sehwag was the best offie on show on the last Indian tour of Oz

Not saying that he's been great but Vettori has easily been the most threatening spinner vs Oz in Oz over the last few years

Haha, I know exactly what Uppercut is going to reply with to this.

It's true. Thing is, Vettori's the better spinner outside the sub-continent, but making a difference as a spinner is very difficult in places like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. A spinner who is good on the sub-continent will be the difference between a win and a loss or draw more often than one who is good outside it. That's my thinking anyway.

Ahh I missed the edit.

Anyway, everyone knows who the most effective spinner against Oz is.

Thing is, he wasn't even particularly good against Oz last year. Five wickets @ 39 in two games. Kumble in '07/'08 performed much better IMO.

And I watched the series, and Vettori did appear to bowl better than those figures suggest, but that's the story of Vettori's career- looking like he has what it takes to get wickets but rarely getting them. It's not unique to games against Australia.

Basically, it's all relative

Oz is an incredibly hard place to bowl spin - the wickets arent receptive and, of late, the Oz batters have been good

However, at least Vettori has threatened whilst the weed has done nothing more than raise the white flag

Yeah, would agree with that.

But it's a good reason why you'd have to go for a spinner who's good at bowling on the subcontinent over one who's good at bowling in Australia. Because even if you are good at bowling spin in Australia, you're still not going to be very effective.

Another ton from Dan the Man - he's going to end up with some seriously impressive career stats at this rate
