Washington & Samarkand Draws

Very few CWLanders this week, so we'll zoom right through pretty quick.

Season I Legg Mason Tennis Classic - Singles

OK draw for Delev in a pretty strong field ahead of the Masters Series events. Should get past his qualifying opponent (maybe one of CWLand's own), but meets a tough opponent in the form of Indianapolis champ Morgan Carter in the second round. de Wet has it tougher with the underperforming Zeman first up, and then Rick Henson in the second round who is deserving of a higher seeding than eleven.

World No. 4 Radivoj Daneu has a tough draw and might struggle with the likes of Alex Peters, Oneil Stewart and Danijel Micic. Micic is my roughie to win this along with Henson, but a safer bet would be a Murdoch-Cowan or a Murdoch-Charles final. Murdoch to finally break through with his first win.

Comfortable for Maxum right up to Mary in the quarters who made a second round appearance at Roland Garros. Should get past there and make it through to the final. Suryakant Singh has a tough match first up against Shvelidze, and it doesn't get any easier from there.

Raffle off the other final spot between Ortiz and Villaneuva - Maxum to beat the latter or to lose to the former.

Maxum seeded 1, me feel this was a poor tournament choice, still could claim first ever title, even if it is a challenger...Maxum to bow out in first round shocker.

Qualifying - Washington

Unseeded CWLander Randy Banks is one of two players from the emerging nation to earn qualification to their first main draw at ATP level. The World No. 317 was forced to upset two higher ranked British opponents in his two matches - starting off with a hard fought 7-5 3-6 6-4 victory over fourth seed Andy Russell. Brimming with confidence, Banks stole another lengthy three-setter in the qualifying round with a 7-6(5) 4-6 6-4 win over Edward Freeland. Banks now faces compatriot Spas Delev in the opening round.

Elsewhere, 14th seed Vladimir Stakhanov upset top seed Sipko Wetzel in three sets to also advance to his first main draw. After being tested by unknown wildcard Cody Fullen in the first round, Stakhanov played a much better game against the World No. 136 whose best finish this season was a semifinal in the Challenger in Reggio Emilia. After dropping the second, Stakhanov picked up his game and sealed the match 6-2 2-6 6-4 to set up a first round clash with Japan's Ninteh Doh.

Finally, Matt Bre failed to replicate his second round appearance in Los Angeles after crashing out in straight sets to Austria's Jurgen Boniek. Bre will now have to hope for success in the doubles competition after his 2-6 3-6 loss in the first round of qualifying.

1st Round - Washington

Men's Singles (Seeds, Wildcards & Qualifiers - Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • Spas Delev has unsurprisingly won the all-CWLand clash in the first round, but it wasn't as easy as he would have hoped as Randy Banks took the world No. 112 to three sets. It looked business as usual for Delev in the first set as he broke in game three and hung on to his slender lead to take the first set against a game Banks. But the inexperienced Banks, in his first match on the ATP circuit, came out impressively in the second as he more than matched Delev - breaking service in the fourth and twelfth games to level the match at a set each. However, it was the increased experience of Delev which enabled him to bounce back and bounce Banks out of the tournament; advancing to a tough second round clash with Sydney and Indianapolis champion Morgan Carter. (Delev d. Banks, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2)
  • Enigmatic Zimbabwean-born Alex de Wet joins Delev in the second round after coming from a set down to take out the Czech Republic's Václav Zeman. Zeman, who was unofficially ranked at No. 24 at the start of the season, looked to make Washington the place he gets his career back on track as he took a tight first set tiebreaker against the volatile de Wet. But just as we have come to expect, de Wet produced the unexpected and came back with two very impressive sets to ultimately secure a comfortable victory. It gets tougher, though, in the second round as eleventh seed and former World No. 3 Rick Henson awaits. (de Wet d. Zeman, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3)
  • Elsewhere, qualifier Vladimir Stakhanov could not become the third CWLander to make it through to the second round after he was easily beaten by veteran Japanese player Ninteh Doh. Despite an impressive qualifying, Stakhanov did not bring his confidence to the table against his vastly experienced Asian opponent who took just fifty-eight minutes to advance to a second round matchup with Tiago Matias. (Doh d. Stakhanov, 6-3, 6-2)
  • With all the seeds receiving byes, there were minimal first round upsets. However Swede Henrik Henrikkson managed to stage a remarkable comeback against wildcard Randy Bruce as the American gave up a 6-1 2-0 lead to fall in three sets. Elsewhere, German giant killer Alex Peters' straight sets win over Bogdan Maurer sets up an interesting second round clash with top seed Radivoj Daneu - the Serb definately receiving a raw deal in the draw. (Henrikkson d. Bruce, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(3))

  • Seeded players out: None.

2nd Round - Washington (United States)

Men's Singles (Seeds, Wildcards & Qualifiers - Seeds - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • Spas Delev has all but assured his place in the world's top hundred and remains a very real chance of making the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Cup after a stunning straight sets thrashing of Morgan Carter. The inconsistent twelfth seed, in his first match since claiming the Indianapolis crown, was completely stunned by the CWLander whose aggressive game seemed to rattle the local hope. Trailing 0-5, Carter staged a brief fightback in the first set before sending a backhand wide to hand Delev the first set in just thirty-five minutes. Carter looked to have found his range in the second as he held in his first two service games, but in the sixth games of the set he netted a simple volley to hand Delev a 4-2 lead. From there, the CWLander looked too good and advanced to the third round with a surprise flogging of the American star. (Delev d. Carter, 6-2, 6-2)
  • His opponent in the third round will be world No. 75 Ivan Cesljar who came from a set down to beat fifth seed Henry Charles in the upset of the day. The tall Croat dropped the first set after giving away a 40-0 lead in the penultimate game, but managed to fight valiantly in the second set against the British No. 1 to break service on three occasions. Neither man served well until the third set where Cesljar found the confidence Charles could not; advancing to the round of 16 in three sets. (Cesljar d. Charles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4)
  • Eleventh seed Rick Henson remains a real chance of causing waves in Washington as he disposed of Alex de Wet in straight sets. Fresh off a come from behind win over Václav Zeman in the first round, de Wet started confidently to hold in his first game. But the hard-working Henson soon broke de Wet's serve and clung on to the slight lead to claim the opening set 6-4. The former world No. 3 went from strength-to-strength as some solid serving saw de Wet miss his one and only break point for the match; Henson proving too good and advancing to the third round. (Henson d. de Wet, 6-4, 6-3)
  • The only other seed to fall was world No. 22 Sanchez Emelio who, after taking the second set 6-0, failed to earn any points against unseeded Aussie Adam Murray. Emelio looked to have sewn the contest up at 3-1 in the third, before Murray came back brilliantly to steal the match in a tiebreaker and set up a third round clash with Serb Danijel Micic. (Murray d. Emelio, 6-2, 0-6, 7-6(5))

  • Seeded players out:
    Morgan Carter;
    Henry Charles;
    Sanchez Emelio.
Samarkand Challenger
1st Round - Samarkand (Uzbekistan)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • Top seed Jarkko Maxum has started things off brightly in his challenge for his maiden Challenger title with a straight sets win over Germany's Marcus Heindrich. The world No. 92 took just fifty-four minutes to dismantle Heindrich on Court 1; dominating the play from both the baseline and the net in some brave tennis against the unseeded world No. 229. Maxum's win sets up a second round clash with Ukraine's Andriy Zhukov, after he easily accounted for Cypriot Vasos Lazos.
  • In his first competitive match since the Medibank International back in January, Suryakant Singh dusted off the cobwebs in a clinical upset against Merab Shvelidze. Where in Sydney he fell first round to Václav Zeman in a tight three-set affair, he had no such troubles against Shvelidze as the talented Indian-born player earned five breaks of the Georgian's serve. Whilst he looked shaky when started off points himself, he impressed when returning after such a long break between matches. He now faces a very winnable second round clash with local wildcard Vagiz Ibrahimov who stunned third seed Gocha Berianidze in straight sets. (Singh d. Shvelidze, 6-3, 6-3)

  • Seeded players out:
    Gocha Berianidze;
    Christian Mary;
    Cameron van der Cleer.

  • CWLand's Spas Delev will this Friday play in the biggest match of his career after producing a crushing straight sets victory over Croatia's Ivan Cesljar. Following his surprisingly easy win over twelfth seed Morgan Carter in the second round, Delev came out full of confidence against the Croat whose serving left a lot to be desired. The CWLander brutally attacked the second serves of Cesljar to have him on the back foot, and stunned the crowd by racing to his first 6-0 set of the season in dominant style. The world No. 75 seemed to shake off the first set horrors by stealing an early break from Delev in the second to lead 4-2. But Delev, celebrating an entry inside the world's top ninety, had too much heart as he came roaring back to book a quarterfinal spot in straight sets. (Delev d. Cesljar, 6-0, 7-5)
  • It will, however, step up a notch as second seed and Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan ominously returned to form in the best possible way by destroying Russian No. 1 Dmitry Orlov inside an hour. The teenager dropped just one game all match as he picked apart Orlov in just forty-six minutes in his most destructive tennis since lifting the Wimbledon trophy in early July. (Cowan d. Orlov, 6-0, 6-1)
  • In the top half of the draw, an all-Serbia showdown beckons with top seed Radivoj Daneu and ninth seed Danijel Micic set to face off. There is well-documented tension between the pair, and in their only previous meeting in 's-Hertogenbosch it was the unpredictable Micic who took the win. Both men were impressive in the third round; Micic starting things off with a straight sets win over Aussie Matthew Tobin. But it was Daneu who came through a tougher match looking stronger than ever as he routed Oneil Stewart in two sets. (Daneu d. Stewart, 6-2, 6-3)

  • Seeded players out:
    Li Wang;
    Davis Kennedy;
    Tiago Matias;
    Dmitry Orlov;
    Oneil Stewart;
    Kim Vollan.
  • There was no such luck for Delev in the doubles as he and partner Matt Bre were slaughtered in straight sets by Japanese duo Akihiko Veno and Ninteh Doh. The pair managed just three games in the brutal straight sets loss, as Veno and Doh advanced to a second round meeting with second seeds Wayne Boyd and Morgan Carter.

  • Seeded teams out:
    Manfried Manz /
    Walter Schiller.
Samarkand Challenger
2nd Round - Samarkand (Uzbekistan)

[/u]Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • Jarkko Maxum has overcome a poor start to his second round clash in Uzbekistan with a three-set win over Ukraine's Andriy Zhukov. Zhukov shocked the top seed in the first set 6-4 and looked like he could cause an upset against a world top hundred player. But Maxum lifted his game in the second and improved as the match progressed; overwhelming Zhukov and advancing to a second quarterfinal in Challenger tournaments. His opponent will be Chile's Alex Rojas who also came from a set down in his second round clash. (Maxum d. Zhukov, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3)
  • Suryakant Singh's impressive return to competitive tennis continued in the second round as he smashed Uzbek wildcard Vagiz Ibrahimov in straight sets to book a place in the quarterfinals. Ibrahimov did not bring the form that helped him to a straight sets upset against Gocha Berianidze in the first round as Singh dominated with some heavy hitting and a willingness to come up the net. He did, however, give his opponent six chances at breaking service, and was lucky to get away with just the one service break for the match as Ibrahimov failed to capitalise on his opportunities. Singh faces his biggest task yet with Argentine sixth seed Emelio Cobos waiting and fresh off a 6-1, 6-0 thrashing of Spain's Eugenio Galindo. (Singh d. Ibrahimov, 6-1, 6-4)

  • Seeded players out: Johan Ortiz.
  • Seeded teams out: Juan Manuel Cortés / Javier Villaneuva; Christian Mary / Jean-Luc Sagna.
---

Pretty dull set of matches in Washington, so hopefully the quarterfinals serve up something better. Unfortunately for Delev, I think his run will end here but even if it does he shoots right up the rankings to around No. 87 (really depends on how far Maxum goes in at Samarkand).
