I'm loudly confident of taking Hall down in the 2nd round. I have been talking to Tonya Harding on the phone about the best ways to nobble superior players.

It may be a challenegr tournament, but will be good to put something in the pool room, my compliments to Singh for a solid lead in game to the final.

Legg Mason Tennis Classic
Final - Washington (United States)

Men's Singles (Seeds, Wildcards & Qualifiers - Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)
  • Serbia's Radivoj Daneu has claimed his fourth title of the season in the ATP tournament in Washington after taking a three-set victory over Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan. Cowan, who had yet to drop a set all week, was stunned in the opening set by the new world No. 3 whose ability to create angles frustrated the powerful teenager. But after dropping the first set within half an hour, Cowan found his range and dramatically lifted his game in the second to level the match at a set each. But that was all he could manage as he slipped in and out of the third set and ultimately dropped the final three games on the trot to hand the Serb the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. (Daneu d. Cowan, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2)

  • Seeded players out: Darcy Cowan.
  • American doubles duo Hugh James and Ralph Robinson have claimed their third title of the season and have all but assured their place in the Masters Series finals later in the year after a come-from-behind victory against Frenchman Jean-Alain Depuis and China's Li Wang. The top ranked team dropped the first set to the surprise unseeded combination, before finding their rhythm in front of an expectant home crowd to change home in comfortable style in the match tiebreaker. (James / Robinson d. Depuis / Li, 3-6, 6-4, [10-2])

  • Seeded teams out: None.

Samarkand Challenger
Final - Samarkand (Uzbekistan)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)
  • CWLand's Jarkko Maxum has entered the world's top eighty for the first time by snatching a three-set slog in the final of the Samarkand Challenger in Uzbekistan. Against in form second seed Javier Villaneuva, Maxum started brightly to capitalise on an early break in a convincing first set. The second set saw the Spaniard produce a more competitive performance, but he looked on the verge of defeat at 3-5 in the tiebreaker. But Maxum failed to capitalise on his lead, and Villaneuva stole four points on the trot to send the match to a decider. With both men serving nervously, six breaks of service sent the match to a deciding tiebreaker. But Maxum ended quickly as he claimed the decider 7-0 and celebrated a move to world No. 79. (Maxum d. Villaneuva, 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(0))

  • Seeded players out: Javier Villaneuva.
  • Dutch duo Ruud Goffin and Cameron van der Cleer came from a set down to upstage Uzbek-Russian pair Anvar Juraev and Yevgeny Pushkov in the final of the doubles draw.

  • Seeded teams out: None.

Stoked. World Number 79 after Languishing around the 140-150 mark for so long. Top 50 is just around the corner, and finally, I have something to put in the pool room.

Haha yes.

Season over for Berg

World number 49 Maarten Berg's worst fears have been confirmed with news that he will require a full knee reconstruction which will keep him out of action until season II. Berg has played with little success over the previous weeks with a sore knee, and scans confirmed that he had torn his anterior cruiciate ligament. After being seeded nineteenth at the Australian Open (where he lost in the third round to Tiago Matias), Berg's season has been a disappointment with second round exits in Paris and Wimbledon, and a semifinal in Zagreb. He will hope to be fit for the Australian Open next season. His withdrawal, and that of Ross Onwye, sees alternates Ion Andueza and Paolo Mandonna earn entry into the draw.

Guys in the main draw of the Masters Series in Canada (really directing this at Oxenstierna, Smeltz and Hancianu), if you reckon you are in need of hard court practice doubles are available. From what I can see, this series generally attracts a number of top guys to play doubles (last year had Federer-Wawrinka, Nadal-Robredo, etc.), so if you want to play I'm cool with that. Drake-Korps and Davis-Mustard are in and seeded.

With Ross Onwye injured, Hayden is looking for a partner for this week too.

Reading through some of that, which season will include the Olympic games? If Season 1 was 2009, then I'm guessing if it's included it would be season 4.

I can testify that Ross Onwye is a great doubles player. His brother Hayden runs a much better book festival though. This, I can guarantee.

That'd be the long-term game, but I might consider it earlier. I also threw around the idea of a sort of world cup type thing that runs simultaneously to the Masters Series finals - so a 64 draw singles and doubles gets a singles player and a doubles team from each country. I kinda discarded it because it takes away from the Olympics, but I'm happy to give it a crack if people like that idea (or have any others).

What are the guys outside the top 50 doing this week? I'll partner Onwye if I'm not playing.

You, Spleen, Korps and Stakhanov are in qualifying for Montréal. No one from CWLand in Segovia, so I'll probs just put the draw up near the end of the week.

Happy for you to go with Onwye.

Perhaps there could be a non-ranking round robin competition (similar to Kooyong) for some of the players that missed out on the Masters Series final. Could even include just CWL players.

All CWLand clash there guarantees one in the qualifying round with Tom Vollan the likely opponent. He's been in **** form as of late (double bagelled by Brdar in Los Angeles), but remains a threat.

Alternate Stakhanov has a pretty cruisy run in the first round, but it gets really hard with one of the young guns Parmentier or Donaldson in the second round.

Bowenburg has our hardest draw with Zeman and then probably Hainisch. If he gets through he'll deserve it.

Rogers Cup
Qualifying - Canada Masters - Montréal (Canada)

  • Rob Bowenburg has set up a first round clash with American Morgan Carter in the Canada Masters after a come-from-behind victory in the qualifying round. Bowenburg started by taking a tight three set affair with Czech talent Václav Zeman, and looked a monty for qualification as eighth seed Heinz Hainisch fell in the first round. However the qualifying round started poorly for Bowenburg as he dropped the first set, before coming back strongly to escape with victory in three sets. (Bowenburg d. King, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4)
  • Billy Spleen, however, was not as successful in the qualifying round as he fell in three sets to big-serving Norwegian Tom Vollan. Vollan started with his first victory in any form since the Rome Masters by crushing Australia's Steve Cole, and looked confident early against Spleen. But Spleen, who likewise took a comfortable victory over Martti Korpinen rallied to take the second set 6-3. But the power of the Norwegian ace proved too much for the young CWLander as he set up a horror first round match with Rick Henson in three sets. (Spleen d. Korpinen, 6-3, 6-4)
  • Vladimir Stakhanov joined Korpinen on the list of first round casualties as he failed to get past wildcard Tony Nikolic of Canada. Nikolic proved too good at the most cruicial times for the Stakhanov who, replacing Paolo Mandonna in the qualifying draw, blew several opportunities to break the Nikolic service. Nikolic would ultimately suffer defeat to Swede Björn Donaldson in the qualifying round. (Nikolic d. Stakhanov, 7-5, 7-6(4))

    Rob Bowenburg;
    Julian Day;
    Björn Donaldson;
