I'm glad that maxum is disposing of those ranked way lower, help build some confidence for the bigger tournaments coming up.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but is there some sort of periodic intake of newcomers to the CW tennis arena, or have all playing slots been taken?

Thanks.

How much does favourite surface impact on your players performance because I think Bowenburg should change to hard instead of indoor or whatever I chose earlier on.

I'm pretty sure Bowenburg's preferred surface is hard. He's just been unlucky.

  • World No. 5 Darcy Cowan has eased to victory in the fourth semifinal in Washington; advancing to the semifinals of the Legg Mason Cup with a straight sets win over CWLand's Spas Delev. Delev's brave run this week has seen him draw praise from surprised onlookers in the nation's capital, but he found himself outmatched by the Wimbledon champion who looked in control of the match from the start. Cowan's form has taken a promising turn for the better ahead of next week's Canada Masters - the draw of which will be released tomorrow - and controlled play at the baseline before successfully coming up to the net regularly after pushing Delev a good distance behind the baseline as he advanced in straight sets. His opponent in the semifinal will be Hungarian third seed József Boros who also advanced in straight sets against Chinese tenth seed Zhijun Sun. (Cowan d. Delev, 6-3, 7-5)
  • The other semifinal pits top seed Radivoj Daneu against former world No. 3 Rick Henson after both took impressive quarterfinal wins. Daneu managed to edge past bitter rival Danijel Micic in a brutal two-and-a-half hour clash on centre court, but the best performance came from Henson who absolutely destroyed fourth seed Dwayne Murdoch. Murdoch managed just two games against the red-hot Henson who sounded out a warning to the world's top players with an inspiring win. (Henson d. Murdoch, 6-2, 6-0)

  • Seeded players out:
    Danijel Micic;
    Dwayne Murdoch;
    Zhijun Sun.
  • Seeded teams out: None.

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • Top seed Jarkko Maxum will this weekend endeavour to claim his maiden career title after booking a place in the semifinals with a solid victory over Chile's Alex Rojas. Maxum started poorly in his second round match against Andriy Zhukov, and looked to rectify that against the Chilean by breaking service early. From there the top seed never looked troubled in a meandering game on centre court; Maxum through in straight sets. (Maxum d. Rojas, 6-2, 6-3)
  • His opponent is surprisingly countryman Suryakant Singh who came from a set down to upset sixth seed Emelio Cobos. Cobos took the first set with a late break of service, before the hard working Singh attacked more regularly in the next two sets to put the Argentine right on the back foot. Singh's persistance paid off as he took Cobos deep into the third set where he stole a break despite Cobos leading 40-15 on service in the eleventh game of the set. Serving for the match, Singh never looked like crumbling as he charged into the semifinals in the longest match of the week in Uzbekistan. (Singh d. Cobos, 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5)
  • The other semifinal pits second seed Javier Villaneuva against local chance Anvar Juraev.

  • Seeded players out:
    Emelio Cobos.
  • All seeded teams are out of the doubles draw as Denis Inomov and Rustam Toshpulatov - the top seeded locals - were smashed in straight sets by Dutch duo Ruud Goffin and Cameron van der Cleer. The unseeded Netherlands nationals dropped just two games in the first set - both off the powerful serve of Toshpulatov - in a dominant display. But that prepared few for the second set as Inomov and Toshpulatov collapsed under the pressure as Goffin and van der Cleer sealed a crushing upset. (Goffin / van der Cleer d. Inomov / Toshpulatov, 6-2, 6-0)

  • Seeded teams out:
    Valery Belousov /
    Mykaylo Martynenko;
    Denis Inomov /
    Rustam Toshpulatov.

  • Radivoj Daneu has survived a brief fightback from American Rick Henson to book a place in the Legg Mason Cup final in three sets. The Serbian top seed started well by breaking Henson in game three of the first set, before clinging on to his slender lead despite offering Henson three break points for the set. Henson struck back in the second set, though, as he finally managed to break the swinging serve of Daneu to set up a 3-1 lead. Whilst the Serbian struck back in the sixth game, Henson had too much for the top seed and surged to take the second set 6-4. But there was still something left in the tank for the world No. 4 who regained the world No. 3 position and third seeding at the Clowich Masters with a comfortable third set performance. (Daneu d. Henson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2)
  • It will be a first seed vs. second seed final as Darcy Cowan's brilliant form this week continued into a tough semifinal against world No. 8 József Boros. The Hungarian No. 1 fought hard against Cowan, but was ultimately beaten in straight sets as the Wimbledon champion continued his resurgance at the best possible time ahead of next week's Masters tournament in Canada. Boros largely returned well against Cowan, but was left wanting on service as Cowan managed to set up a highly anticipated final in an hour and a half. (Cowan d. Boros, 6-4, 7-5)

  • Seeded players out:
    József Boros;
    Rick Henson.
  • There was an upset in the doubles draw as second seeds Wayne Boyd and Morgan Carter fell in straight sets to Jean-Alain Depuis and Li Wang. In a brutal display, the unseeded French-Chinese duo outplayed their more fancied opponents convincingly to secure a comfortable win. They face top seeded Americans Hugh James and Ralph Robinson in the final after they withstood a late fightback from Lee Inmin and Qingdong Tsai to earn a three-set win. (Depuis / Li d. Boyd / Carter, 6-4, 6-1)

  • Seeded teams out:
    Wayne Boyd /
    Morgan Carter.

  • Top seed Jarkko Maxum has prevailed in a tight all-CWLand semifinal in Samarkand with a straight sets win over Suryakant Singh. The brave Singh put up a real fight against his top hundred ranked opponent, but just fell short at the most important times of the match as Maxum advanced to his maiden Challenger final. Maxum claimed the first set 6-4, and looked to be cruising in the second at 3-0 before Singh charged back into the contest by taking the double break. In a set filled with nervous serving, it was only right that it went to a tiebreaker where a cool Maxum prevailed to set up a finals clash with second seed Javier Villaneuva who trounced Uzbek fourth seed Anvar Juraev in straight sets. (Maxum d. Singh, 6-4, 7-6(3))

  • Seeded players out:
    Anvar Juraev.
  • Dutch pair Ruud Goffin and Cameron van der Cleer will contest the doubles final against Anvar Juraev and Yevgeny Pushkov.

  • Seeded teams out: None.

Hall set to reclaim No. 1 ranking

World No. 2 Jason Hall has been handed a real opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 ranking for the first time since the French Open after being handed a generous draw in the Rogers Cup Masters event in Montréal. The second seed should not be troubled in the earlier rounds, before a potentially difficult quarterfinal match with world No. 8 József Boros awaits. Hall trails current No.1 Daniel Páez Blanco by just 45 points, meaning that the American just needs to go one round deeper than the Spaniard (assuming both make it to the third round.
R1 - Bye
R2 - Heath Davis/QUALIFIER
R3 - Zoltán Varga/Wayne Boyd (expected)
QF - József Boros/Illya Altman (expected)
SF - Radek Špidlá/Juan Moreno (expected)
F - Daniel Páez Blanco/Radivoj Daneu (expected)

Blanco meanwhile has been handed a horror draw with his Indianapolis conqueror Henry Charles waiting in the third round. Blanco has a comparatively poor record on hard courts compared to his flawless clay record, and could even find difficulties in the second round with Jojo Mustard and Jason Bradley contesting a very exciting first round match.
R1 - Bye
R2 - Jason Bradley/Jojo Mustard
R3 - Henry Charles/Li Wang (expected)
QF - Sven Oxenstierna/Rasmus Olesen (expected)
SF - Radivoj Daneu/Darcy Cowan (expected)
F - Jason Hall/Radek Špidlá (expected)

CWLanders
Sven Oxenstierna - Morgan Carter could be a tricky second round clash due to his unpredictability, whilst it gets worse from there with either Stewart or Olesen waiting. Should he get through that match, he has a real shot at the quarterfinals as he can take all in Blanco's side of the section. Generally plays well in these tournaments.
Jojo Mustard - One of the worst starts he could get with Jason Bradley a tough first round opponent. On his day he can beat the guys in his section, but he needs to bounce back from his second round exit in LA (funnily enough, Depuis is a possibility in the third round though he'll probably fall to Li twice in as many weeks)
Jamee Hancianu - Qualifier first up and Cowan in the second - seeing Cowan's form of late, Jamee is in real trouble. If he sneaks past there the draw opens up, but don't bank on it.
Randy Smeltz - Part III of Smeltz/Joaquin and Randy should bounce back from his defeat in Hamburg to the Spaniard on the harder stuff. Horrible little section, though, with the likes of Brdar, Moreno and Henson making it really tough for everyone.
Jefferson Drake - Has had troubles with Ivan Genov in the past, and all things considering he's got a bad run. If he wants to secure a spot in the top ten, he's got to start performing in these tournaments. But with Kennedy, Špidlá and Micic hanging around in this section of death I wouldn't be overly confident.
Heath Davis - Should win past a qualifier, but has the worst draw of the all the wildcards. Not going to win past Hall.

Think I'm a chance of a quarter final showing. Believe I may have a winning record against Moreno??

Great read there SBI. Some good signs there, always good to be in a semi-final. Probably a bit much to expect on my return to competitive tennis, to beat a top-100 player. But hopefully, I can improve on this in other tournaments.
