• Jamee Hancianu is through to his third career semifinal after a comfortable victory over Russia's Oleg Puder in the quarterfinals of the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad. Hancianu has been in rampant touch this week, but faced his first major test against the Russian No. 4. The teenager struggled at times in the first set and was forced to come from a break down to send it to a tiebreaker. There the hardworking Russian stuck close to Hancianu before the World No. 31 finally broke free to claim it 11-9. From there, Hancianu had no troubles as he wrapped up the second set in twenty-nine minutes to advance to the semifinals. There he will face second seed Juan Moreno who likewise is yet to drop a set this week. (Hancianu d. Puder, 7-6(9) 6-1)
• The promising form of Randy Smeltz has crashed and burned in time for the weekend as he was smashed in straight sets by local Almen Benaglio. The inspired Swiss No. 1 took just sixty-two minutes to dispatch the hardworking Smeltz who failed to take the initiative against the swell of home support for Benaglio. The first set was actually a lengthy tussle which lasted well over half an hour; but Smeltz struck less than half the winners of his highly rated opponent as he was content to just keep the ball in play. But Benaglio was on a roll and blasted him off the court in the latter part of the opening set and then in the entire second set to secure a crushing win. All four semifinalists now have yet to drop a set this week, and the first semifinal will possibly be the highlight with two players in roaring form. Benaglio's opponent Diego Hurtado continued his good form from Hamburg with a 6-1 6-2 thrashing of Denis Isaev. (Benaglio d. Smeltz, 6-1 6-1)

• All seeded teams are out of the doubles draw in Gstaad after two massive boilovers in the quarterfinals. French Open runners up Tal Cohen and Raz Teper were stunned in straight sets by Rafael Carioca and Felipe Menon, whilst third seeds Carlos Machado and Morton Blundell suffered a surprise defeat to Romania's Radu Ghita and Swiss No. 2 Pascal Schmidt.

• Local wildcard Adem Tadic pulled off the upset of the tournament in Umag with a massive straight sets win over Italian third seed Carlo Amato. Amato was lucky to escape from his second round clash, and there was no second set comeback here as the local crowd was in raptures with the Croat joining Miroslav Brdar into the semifinals of his local tournament. He faces a stiff task in the form of Illya Altman on Saturday after the Ukrainian took a three-set win over another Croat; Nilikar Midid. (Tadic d. Amato, 6-3 6-4)
• In the other semifinal, second seed Brdar faces off with Patrick Pascaul after the Frenchman took a massive straight sets win over Wimbledon semifinalist Zoltan Varga. (Pascaul d. Varga, 6-4 6-4)

• Seeded players out: Carlo Amato; Zoltan Varga.

• With the top three seeds through to the semifinals of the doubles draw, the only surprise came with more wildcards making an impact in Umag as Ivo Nikolic and Vilmos Petricevic were unlikely winners in an all-Croatian quarterfinal. The wildcard duo were too good for Ivan Cesljar and Ivan Vuka in a massive boost to their rankings.

• Heath Davis's strong week in Los Angeles has come to a bitter end in singles as World No. 4 Radek Spidla sounded out a warning ahead of the Masters Series tournaments in Canada and Clowich with a straight sets win. The top seed wasn't overly convincing in the first set against the big-serving Davis as both men looked on song as the first nine games were played in lightening quick succession with both men firing down winners. But in the tenth game of the opener, Davis lost his confidence with two doubles faults which handed the Czech giant an opening which he took gleefully - securing the set with his first break from three opportunities. The second set, however, was all Spidla as he charged towards another ATP level semifinal with a straight sets win. (Spidla d. Davis, 6-4 6-2)
• In one of the biggest chokes of the season, Australian fifth seed David Champion gave up a five game lead in the second set to crash out in three to China's Zhijun Sun. Warning bells sounded in the opener as Champion scrambled to convert a 5-1 lead to a 6-3 first set win; but the World No. 24 looked to have overcome those nerves to race out to a 5-0 lead in the second. But the injury-plagued season of Zhijun took a massive turn for the better as the fourth seed won an amazing nine games in a row to totally destroy the confidence of the Aussie. After claiming the second 7-5, Zhijun romped to a dominant victory against a dispirited Champion whose confidence will no doubt be shot. (Zhijun d. Champion, 3-6 7-5 6-2)
• Finally, second seed Darcy Cowan's indifferent form following his Wimbledon triumph has continued as he was stunned in three sets by countryman Jason Bradley. The 19-year old played confidently at times, but for the most part was outgunned by his older opponent as Bradley quietly set about chipping away at the Cowan serve. Outside of his Davis Cup triumph, Cowan's record since the grass final stands at 1-2 as he struggles to deal with the burden of expectation. (Bradley d. Cowan, 7-5 2-6 6-4)

• Seeded players out: David Champion; Darcy Cowan; Heath Davis.

• Top seeds Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard remain the only seeded team in the doubles draw of the Countrywide Classic, but won't find it easy with a strong field reduced to four. Davis and Mustard were taken to a match tiebreaker by Aleksander Alitspritsin and Bogdan Maurer, but managed to prevail despite a late scare where the Lithuanian-Romanian duo came back from 3-9 down in the decider. The favourites now face Asian stars Lee Inmin and Qingdong Tsai after they dealt with fourth seeds Ashim and Seby Kumar in three sets. (Davis / Mustard d. Alitspritsin / Maurer, 6-2 4-6 [10-7])
• The other semifinal will pit singles semifinalist Jason Bradley and Swede Bjorn Donaldson against Brazilian duo Denis Rodrigues and Roberto Santos.

• Scotland Rivers' mecurial ability to come back from the dead this week in Vancouver as continued as he booked a spot in the semifinals of the Challenger event with a come-from-behind win over Greece's Petros Pangalos. Rivers dropped the first set 3-6, before finally waking up in the second and running away with a clinical victory. (Rivers d. Pangalos, 3-6 6-2 6-3)
• Meanwhile, Rob Bowenburg's quarterfinal woes have continued as he bowed out in a lengthy three-set affair with sixth seeded Aussie David Jones. After dominating his opening two matches, the top seed was more than matched by the World No. 143 who played his best tennis after a struggle against Michel Paquette in the second round. But after a crushing opening set, there was nothing to split the two teams in the next two as both went to tiebreakers with both men breaking on four occasions. But in a long final tiebreaker, the sixth seed prevailed 9-7 in a heartbreaker for Bowenburg. The Lob now has a record of 0-2 in quarterfinals at ATP level and a 1-2 record in quarterfinals at ITF level. (Jones d. Bowenburg, 6-2 6-7(3) 7-6(7))

• Seeded players out: Rob Bowenburg.

• Tiebreakers were no fun for Bowenburg in the doubles as he and Rivers crashed out in straight tiebreakers against Sunil Colaco and, you guessed it, David Jones. The Aussie continued his hold over the CWLander as he and his Indian partner advanced with a straight sets victory. Rivers will tomorrow be pressing for revenge against the Aussie in the singles semifinals, whilst Jones and Colaco face off against Karl King and Murphy S'ua in the doubles.

Yeah, sad to see 'The Heath' go out, but we can take out our revenge in the doubles. We have been disappointing thus far in tournaments after promising starts, hopefully we can reverse that record.

• Argentine second seed Juan Moreno was the first player through to the singles final in Gstaad after a dominant victory over CWLand 19-year old Jamee Hancianu. The World No. 7 has been a quiet achiever this week when considering the exciting matches produced in the top half, but he certainly sounded out a warning to his opponent in the final in a clinical beatdown of Hancianu. The CWLander struggled on service against the powerful Argentine who dictated play right throughout the match en route to a convincing straight sets win. (Moreno d. Hancianu, 6-1, 6-3)
• His opponent in the final will be eighth seed Diego Hurtado after the Colombian ran away with a tight three-set win against local hope Almen Benaglio. The German Hamburg Open quarterfinalist edged an exciting opening set 7-5, before Benaglio struck back in the second to level the match at a set each. But the trademark forehand of the fiery South American proved the difference in the third as he let loose with double the winners of his disappointing Swiss opponent to prevail in three. (Hurtado d. Benaglio, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1)

• Radu Ghita and Pascal Schmidt's strong run this week came to a blinding halt in the semifinals of the doubles draw as they were smashed in straight sets by Benjamin Hartmann and Mischa Pasveer. After knocking off the third seeds in the quarterfinals, Ghita and Schmidt would have been confident coming into the semis. But they were stopped in their tracks by the Swiss-Dutch combination who charged to a 6-1 6-0 win. They face Romania duo Viorel Iftime and Marius Micu in the final after they prevailed in a too-ing and fro-ing second semifinal against Rafael Carioca and Felipe Menon.

• Illya Altman will face Miroslav Brdar in a top two seed showdown in the final of the Croatia Open as both men scored convincing semifinal wins. Top seed Altman proved too good for surprise packet Adem Tadic; the wildcard was bagelled in the first set before putting up a better fight in the second. He ultimately fell in a tiebreaker to hand Altman his third ATP final berth of the season. (Altman d. Tadic, 6-0, 7-6(2))
• In the other semifinal, Brdar had a surprisingly comfortable victory over sixth seed Patrick Pascaul. Despite being in rampant form, Pascaul had no answer for the tall Croat nor the parochial crowd who willed him to three service breaks and a straight sets win. (Brdar d. Pascaul, 6-3, 6-3)

• Seeded players out: Patrick Pascaul.

• The doubles final will also be a top seed vs. second seed affair as Janos and Zoltan Varga overcame some difficulties to edge out Denis Prevost and Jean Tiquet in a hotly-contested semifinal. The Hungarians dropped the second set to the French duo, before playing an almost flawless match tiebreaker to earn a second final in as many weeks. (J Varga / Z Varga d. • Meanwhile, Belgian top seeds Mark Harmel and Yves Parmentier started slowly in their semifinal, but ultimately chased down a 0-3 deficit to cruise past wildcards Ivo Nikolic and Vilmos Petricevic. (Harmel / Parmentier d. Nikolic / Petricevic, 7-6(5), 6-1)

• Top seed Radek Spidla is odds on favourite to take the Countrywide Classic title as his strong run continued with a straight sets thrashing of Chinese 20-year old Zhijun Sun. Still lacking match practice against high quality opposition, Zhijun was hit off the court in the first set by the dominant Czech who was keen to atone for his semifinal exit last week in Indianapolis. Taking the first set 6-0, Spidla shot out to a 4-1 lead in the second and, despite a brief comeback from the Chinese No. 1 to add some respectability to the score, ran away with a comfortable win. (Spidla d. Zhijun, 6-0, 7-5)
• He faces third seeded Dane Rasmus Olesen who came from a set down to beat local favourite Jason Bradley. The American sixth seed took the first set with in a brilliant tiebreaker (7-1) and looked odds on favourite of making a third ATP final. But the gangly Olesen lifted his game and, answering the determined American, managed to break service early in the second and third sets to set up a second ATP level final. (Olesen d. Bradley, 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2)

• Seeded players out: Jason Bradley; Zhijun Sun.

• Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard will not be adding to their solitary doubles trophy in a Challenger in Manta after a tight loss to Chinese pairing Lee Inmin and Tsai Qingdong in the semifinals. Davis and Mustard took the second set comfortably after being edged out through a late break of service in the first, and headed into the match tiebreaker with a wealth of confidence behind them. But the Korean-Taipei team got the jump on the top seeds and never looked back as they secured a surprise finals berth. (Lee / Qingdong d. Davis / Mustard, 7-5, 2-6, [10-5])
• American Jason Bradley received a consolation for his singles exit as he and Swede Bjorn Donaldson secured a spot in the final of the doubles draw. In a comfortable straight sets victory, the unseeded pairing ensured that their decision to team together this week was a good one as they advanced in straight sets against Brazil's Denis Rodrigues and Roberto Santos. Rivers and Jones were evenly matched right throughout the match, but it was the class of the CWLander at the important moments which proved to be the difference between the pair. Taking the first set by stealing a late break of service, Rivers again produced the goods at the climax of the second set to take the tiebreaker 7-4 and advance in straight sets. (Rivers d. Jones, 6-4, 7-6(4))
• His opponent in the final will be Austrian No. 3 Martin Reiter who came from a set down to upset American Anothy Ficher. Dropping the first set comfortably in a tiebreaker, Reiter came back strongly to oust the fourth seed in an entertaining three-set affair. (Reiter d. Ficher, 6-7(1), 6-2, 7-5)

• Seeded players out: Anothy Ficher.

• Jones and partner Sunil Colaco will, however, contest the doubles final after upsetting fourth seeds Karl King and Murphy S'ua in the semifinals. They face third seeds Mikel Fosdike and Sebastien Gagnon in the final after the French-Canadian duo came from a set down to beat British pair Edward Freeland and Scott Whitehouse.
