Feel compelled to point out that there's 18 votes for another specialist seamer, only 4 for a second allrounder (both who bowl seam btw) and just 11 votes for a second spinner. Maybe we should vote by what sort of player we want for the last spot and then pick the best of that category, because as was predicted, the seamer vote has been split.

Maybe do a preferential system? Botham and Kallis are obviously not going to win - ask the people who voted for them who they'd prefer out of the other candidates, and then if Lillee is still coming clearly last out of the specialist seamers, do the same for people who voted for him.

Based on the other poll results it's difficult to see why this is anything other than a straight shoot out between McGrath and Murali (apart from the poll starter wanting to carry forward his own favourites).

Question to the thread, for the people who have voted for anyone other than Murali or McGrath, which of those two would they choose if a gun was put to their head?

Honestly I voted for Murali.

Much as I think McGrath would make the best option with the new ball, I think that 3 all time great seamers is more than enough. Murali adds variety to the attack and on a wearing pitch would wreck opposing batting lineups with Warne at the other end.

Not questioning why peolpe voted for Murali, I'm just curious as to how those who voted for neither Murali or McGrath would vote if those two were the only options.

Let's revise that question: for those who voted for neither Murali, McGrath nor Ambrose, how would you vote if those three were the only options?

It's only fair to include Ambrose as these votes could technically give him the lead. That said, it pretty much goes back to a split seamer vote giving Murali the lead. :p

Yeah, nice way to miss the point. If the choice was Murali or (one of McGrath or Ambrose) maybe is the question?

That's better, although one could argue that it's an unfair proposition for Murali and just a devious way to ensure that he doesn't make the side. ;)

Not really, surely the question of which seamer you'd want is only relevant once you decide do you want another spinner or a seamer. Got no agenda to keep Murali out, just want a fourth quick.

Four quicks is overkill IMO when the guy you're not picking is one of the two best bowlers of all time and adds real variety to your attack.

It's not just blindly spinner v seamer though. Many people would only want two spinners because there are two such great ones available.

I wonder how Wasim would have gone here. Only seamer I can think of that would warrant a spot as a forth quick, as he would add variety. Rather then have the same thing all day long from one end.

I know exactly what you mean about Wasim. He would certainly add variety.

However although they are all right-armers, Hadlee, Imran and Marshall are three very different bowlers. And what's more each of them possessed a very varied armoury: they could adjust their pace, they could use different kinds of swing, they could cut or seam the ball either way, they could use different lengths.

So this really isn't a pace attack that's crying out for extra variety.

And even if there were some need for extra variety, bear in mind that the captain of this side could change things about by throwing the ball to either Murali or Warne. (Or if needs be Tendulkar or Richards!)

Well if Murali was picked there'd be no need for Tendulkar or Richards' variety.

Honestly, the attack of two quicks plus the second best fast bowling all rounder of all time plus the worlds best legspinner and the worlds best offspinner of all time is quite the perfect bowling lineup.

Certainly this bowling attack would be close to the one that I would pick in an all time team, with the only exception being either Sobers or Miller for Imran and McGrath for Hadlee.

Hutton
Hobbs
Bradman
Lara
Sobers
Gilchrist
Miller
Marshall
Warne
McGrath
Murali

Though I'd consider dropping Miller for Lara or another specialist batsman.
