I'm not a massive fan of James Hopes, but the selectors are doing him no favours by batting him at 8.

If he's not going to open, then he shouldn't be in the side.

Becuase Hopes has lots more international runs. I'd be surprised if he had a superior FC record too.

Haha in terms of batting I'll accept that. Though my mate was telling me that Jeets hit a 6 down in Wellywood the other day when he was there, so clearly he's a total gun.

He's servicable. Wouldn't consider him hopeless. His record in international cricket doesn't him do him fair justice either.

He is definately better than ALL worthless English ODI all-rounders of the 90s & recent times & in comparison to Ian Harvey (a very similar type player to him) he is easily a better batsman than him.

With Hopes, alarm bells should always be ringing when you have batting allrounders going in at # 8 in an ODI.

The thing is, such is our batting strength, you can't really justify elevating him much higher.

Key word "Worthless" yo. From Dermott Reeve, Chris Lewis, Mark Ealham (although he had his days), Adam & Ben Hollioake (although they looked good at times), Matthew Fleming, Ronnie Irani, Dougie Brown, Tim Bresnan.

Hopes is clearly a better ODI cricket than all of them.

Hopes bowled pretty well yesterday I thought. Good surface for his style of bowling, but it was still a solid effort.

Shouldn't be batting at 8 though, he's awful down the order and you may as well pick a bowler instead.

Yup, and its not only yesterday, barring a few performances here and there Hopes has bowled his ten overs as economically as any of the other front-line bowlers most of the time, him batting at 8 is a bit ridiculous, Haddin at 7 atm too seems to be a bit of waste, because i think he is striking the ball wonderfully, so as i said in the match thread, Aussie just need to cut out one batsmen from the XI and then either pick Hauritz or Harris, and iron out the issue of using part-timers to chip in as the 5th bowler.

Forget his batting...his economy with the ball puts most other specialist Aussie seamers to shame anyway

An easy selection atm (and over most of his career tbf) for his bowling alone. Nothing wrong with an unfashionable medium-pacer as a front line bowler in ODIs if he gets the job done re: e/r (jeez I say this a lot, but it's so true.)

I think its about time White comes with statement or something to tell everyone that he can't bowl, and that would probably send the message across to the Aussie selectors too.

I agree Whits is awful at bowling.I also think if he is going to be in the Aussie team at least put him at number 5 with the bat he has got a similar style to the way symo (not as good though) plays and I think if we give him a chance he might perform well.

I love Hopes he always seems to put in a 120% when he plays and always seems to perform whether it is his fielding or putting in a few overs with the ball and even sometimes with the bat when the team is in trouble.Though I think his batting is better suited to opener.

Yeah, but Cameron White bats too low to have any impact.

Bascially, James Hopes is a better fit for the side as he offers enough with the ball that you can have him batting so low.

Yeah not disputing that, its just that its unfair to pit White against Hopes, on the basis of their bowling imo.

White has no place in the current ODI team imo, he is just a batsman, and he is not good enough to bat at 6 or 7 or neither really a good enough batsman to push any of the estabished middle order batsmen atm, but the problem is atm he seems to get picked as some batting all-rounder, which he certainly isn't.
