Has more to do with when he bowls in domestic Twenty20 matches. He bowls at the front and back end of domestic games when batsmen are looking to tonk. Whereas in T20I he bowls in middle, where he more effective due to his changes.

His used poorly at domestic level, due to lack of options. But he is a better T20 bowler when used right in matches.
What you are saying is fair enough, but tbh he has always come across to as someone who is a better ODI bowler than a T20 bowler, and given the helpful conditions in ODI games he can get people out as he has proved against India and Bangers last year.

Hmmm if that was the case he'd take more wickets.

I think he's a very similar player to Ian Harvey actually, both in his quality and the role he's being asked to fill. Slightly better batsman and slightly inferior bowler to Harvey yet very similar.

I never thought he'd set the world on fire but he is capable of doing a job...his bowling is generally tidy if a little inoccuous...and his batting has it's flaws ie can't play spin to save himself and can tend to get carried away and play one big shot too many, however I can still see him contributing with the bat at ODI level, he's more likely to succeed opening than anywhere else but it's just a question of whether thats in the teams best interests.

His selection has largely been justified due to his great OD record for Queensland and some good performances at good times for Australia A, yet I'm still not sure whether he has a role to play longterm, obviously depends largely on whether Watson can get fit or how quickly Henriques can develop.
Hopes is not half the bowler Harvey was, both bowl at the same pace but at the similarities end there, Harvey was a master with changes of pace and at death bowling, and was a handy lower order bat too, Hopes obviously is a better batsman than Harvey, but unlike Harvey, Hopes doesn't finds it too easy to come in straight away and start slogging from ball one, Hopes would have been a fantastic ODI bowler for Australia had he had all the variations Harvey had.

Anyways as for Hopes being the part of the Australian ODI side goes, as you pointed out, Hopes didn't get into the Australian side just by fluke (like many are saying), he strung together some very good performances for both the Bulls and the Aussie "A" side, and then forced his way into the side and ever since has carried out the job asked of him quite decently in Australian colours.

Some round these parts rate him higher than Watson in terms of which Aussie allrounder should be getting the gig.

Off topic, but did you lose an avatar bet Pup? That's a terrible picture...

Yes but atleast he can keep it down to 8 an over, not 10 an over like the rest of the Queensland seamers. Lesser of the two evils.
To be fair to the others, when your opening bowler doesn't take any wickets it's a looot harder to keep it tight. Besides, it's not the type of bowler you want playing for Australia.

And James Hopes has neither, therefore making him useless at early-match bowling.
You obviously don't watch QLD play very often then. He's only bowling new pill/first change because they're generally ****ing rubbish, though with Swann coming on this year they've been much improved.

He's the Australian team's answer to Chris Harris. He's handy with the bat and handy with the ball, with the ability to chip in at the end and keep the runs down whilst bowling, but not good enough to get in based on either discipline. He probably wouldn't be a good Test player, either.

Unlike Harris, though, James Hopes is probably just a fill-in for Shane Watson.

Hopes is a filler.

I cannot see adding much value to Australia except being a serviceable option to get in his 10 overs for say 45-50 runs and perhaps take a wicket. He is best sent up the order (to be honest opening), as he is not the kind of hard hitter lower down the order.

Hopes has made it into the team for consistently performing well for Queensland. For Australia, he keeps things tight, chips in with wickets and if he was batting in the correct position would probably be scoring more runs.

He's servicable. Wouldn't consider him hopeless. His record in international cricket doesn't him do him fair justice either.

He is definately better than ALL worthless English ODI all-rounders of the 90s & recent times & in comparison to Ian Harvey (a very similar type player to him) he is easily a better batsman than him.

Yeah Harris >> Hopes with the bat, ball too IMO.

More like Hopes is just a slightly better version of Grant Elliott IMO.
Haha there is no way that Harris > Hopes when it comes to batting.

I think his bowling has been alright, his batting will continue to struggle if he comes in at 8.

Becuase Hopes has lots more international runs. I'd be surprised if he had a superior FC record too.

And Athers, Elliott>Hopes>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Patel. So :p

Surprised if who had a better record?

If Ryan and Daniel Harris could merge into one they'd be a handy player.

However as it stands, Hopes is without a doubt a better batsman over Ryan Harris.
