Rafa clearly thinks Gerrard is too good to leave out (quite rightly) but can't be picked in the middle of a four-man midfield for whatever reason (i'd say lack of discipline). He's found a solution finally with using him as support for Torres, giving him what is effectively a free role. But he's a bit too attack-minded to be world-class in the central midfield role. As style of play goes, he's currently quite similar to Tim Cahill (only better)- dogged, enthusiastic, great going forward, scores crucial goals and always gives 100% effort, but too attack-minded to play in the middle without protection.

And yes GIMH, he's done it in the past, but he's not got the application to do it regularly. He'll cover if he must, and do a decent/good job, but he wont do it permanently, as he doesnt want to and whinges about being played out of position, and starts to go wandering during matches. Thats why as talented as he is, he gets the stick because he's not as good as he should be. Right attitude and application and he'd be our best midfielder since Robson

Can anybody shed any more light as to the incident with Stoke's Ricardo Fuller and Andy Griffin? Whole thing seems crazy.

AFAIk a goal was conceded and Fuller told Griffin 'to clear the ball' and Griffin had a go at him and Fuller slapped Griffin. Clearly there must be some history between them either in the past or at the club for such a thing to happen.

If you believe thats all Fuller said then your very naive.

He waited for a good few minutes after the goal (had time for the celebrations to stop, plyaers back in position for the restart) then starts walking down the pitch wagging his finger at the club captain saying far more than 3 words.....

Personally believe he was having a go, implying Griffin shouldnt be on the pitch because of his injury and is to blame for playing on....

Oh gawd, there should be a law against no football on New Years Day. I was even going to watch non-league ****e, just to see what I'm not missing, but even that's been called off and replaced by old fat blokes playing a pub game:no:

The last time Jan 3rd was a Sat there was no NYD footy, ftr, and there is always a round of matches two days after Boxing Day

Ha, of course i'm not saying that. But he eventually played, was discipline enough to play out on the left in Belarus & was excellent.

Fact is he has constantly for England at least since Euro 04 & for Liverpool pre Torres & Mascherano being signed, played in a more withdrawn defensive role very well.
