Awesome day. Who walks away with the honours?
New Zealand, if they can hang on in the one-dayer...

Seriously though, it looks like South Africa have had a pretty damn good day. That late wicket of Haddin seals their day. Now, if only McKenzie had held that early catch. ;)

Awesome day. Who walks away with the honours?
Definitely South Africa, with only one woefully out of touch batsman left at the crease on a 500+ pitch. Roles reversed, Australia would take that position in a heartbeat.

Of course the Saffies, if Haddin' wicket hadn't feel the honours would have been shared, but its good that Clarke overcame his fear of the last over of the day, but now Clarke holds the key tomorrow, he needs to show some maturity and shepherd the tail and guide Australia to atleast 400 and anything more than that would just be a bonus.

Comfortable South Africa's day.

This is similar to the Aus vs. SA Boxing Day Test of 2005, except:

a) Australia don't have a Mike Hussey to rescue their innings
b) They don't have Warne and McGrath to bowl SA out

Surprised to see so many of you guys saying South Africa. Punter made a comment saying that the score of 270~ was worth a fair bit more than that because of the long boundaries and slow outfields. So Australia are in a greater position than detatched observation of the numbers would suggest. Then again, there were many 4s run which somewhat compensates for Punter's argument.

That's the test for Clarke tomorrow, isn't it, he has been made the vice-captain of the side, he is the next captain waiting in the wings, but he would need to play a few innings of character to really prove it to everyone he has it in him to deserve such a huge honour, Clarke clearly isn't in silken form atm, he was virtually grinding out every run he scored today, it was almost Dravidesque.

So it would be a huge thing if he comes out on day 2 and along with the tailenders carries Australia to a commendable position, he would earn my respect if he can do that, and given the Australian situation in this game now, i hope he does that.

After watching Clarke this afternoon, what has happened to the theory about turning the strike over ?. Any explanations as to why Clarke hasn't done this ?

Damian Fleming was on the radio, pointing out that the chances of taking a wicket increases with each consecutive maiden over bowled, then Symonds gets out !!

Australia needs someone to make a big score but staying at the crease without scoring doesn't help the cause.

One can't really accuse Clarke generally of getting bogged down and blocking one end up, because normally he is very good at playing the ball with soft hands and rotating the strike, at Perth and now at the G he has clearly been out of touch, the timing isn't there, the footwork is circumspect and all in all he isn't looking comfortable at the crease, to his credit he is still there and still has a chance to play an innings of substance here.

Well, Punter would say it was Australia's day.

Ponting said it was Australia's day just before Haddin's wicket. After that he admitted that SA were ahead.

Honours even in my book. Now it's a question of the tail. And with Australia's, they could get the score upto 400.

Innings like Clarke's today are the mark of a quality batsman - he's not in touch, his timing is off, and he's struggling, but he mastered any impatience and stuck in there - his wicket is vital to his team and he played like it, when it would have been easy to try and blast his way past his frustration and get himself out. He's maturing nicely.

Magnificent day at the cricket. Ponting's ton was one of my favourite moments at the G. Pity he couldn't go on with it and really should have been more aggressive to Harris who they seem to be showing a lot of respect to. Hussey was unfortunate and Hayden and Symonds, the less said the better. I thought Katich looked brilliant untill he shut up shop after lunch and Clarke's innings was pretty boring but he's still there so full respect. As a stroke player, Haddin is currently the best in the side by a large margin. Best player in the side to watch since the start of the home season, sucks he couldn't last another 10 minutes, if he had we'd be ahead currently. Johnson for a 50 tomorrow.
