Looking again, this NZ bowling-line-up has a cringeworthly lack of death-bowlers. Mills (categorically not one), Southee (on ODI debut), Mason (read Mills), Vettori (spinner, who as-a-rule aren't good death-bowlers) and Styris (probably not, but also probably no worse a bet than anyone else).
Yeah, death bowling is the main reason Gillespie has often been selected ahead of Mason. Mills actually fancies the job but is horrible at it. I'd imagine it'd be Southee and Mills though.

I honestly would prefer Mills bowling now TBH. He'll probably get through his last 2 for not-many at this stage, and Styris would be unlikely to do much worse than Mills at the death.

Pietersen playing a reverse slog off a seamer. Never, ever seen that or expected to do so, even in a ODI.

Styris needs to realise that he is not an off spinner. Bowling at 115km/h with an off spinner's release will not work on 99% of ODI pitches. He needs to go back to bowling 125-130km/h just short of a length with subtle variations, and if his knees are no longer up to that, his selection as an allrounder need to be reviewed.

What a terribly weak bowling performance.

If this is the team for the next wee while then the ODI team's rankings will continue to tumble.

And on that note, does anyone seriously think Patel or even Gillespie would add less to this Oramless team than Marshall or Hopkins? Hindsight is great, but still...

Really wanted Patel in when I heard Oram would be out.
