International 12th Man
social calling Sehwag a unsuitable 20-20 player! Strange
Seen his ODI record? Based on that, his own stated view that he finds the ODI 'strategy' too complicated for his batting compared to tests, and his T20 record prior to this tournament - it is quite a reasonable thought to think.

The difference could be that T20 is so elemental, that you can toss out any particular strategy out of the window and just max out on strike rate. So Sehwag may be much better in T20 than in one day games, this however is something we are just finding out.

(Sehwag is a conundrum, it's not like he is not a thinking man - his captaincy is actually quite good. And it is not like he is an arbitrary slogger. But, bat in hand, he likes his thinking simple).

Have a look at tonight's matches - completely dominated by test players including 3 (Warne, Sehwag and Dravid) who are supposedly unsuited to the format

This is not just a one-off occurence as virtually every game has been dominated by a test player

Why?

Because they are by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar the most talented cricketers and the best option NO MATTER WHAT THE FORMAT

Dravid and Kallis are 2 of the greatest players in history and can adapt to any form of the game when in form.

The fact is, for one reason or another, they havent been in great touch.

I, for one, found it amusing to see Dravid depositing 20/20 specialists onto the roof tonight.

As we all know, it would be exactly the same results in fc or tests against these guys (if a miracle happened and they actually got picked) because he, and the other test players, are light years in front of them.

The big difference is that in 20/20, Dravid and co have to hit from the outset and, as such, some of the substandard guys get lucky from time to time
I wouldn't classify Sehwag and Warne as 'test only' player .... isn't it quite clear that we are talking about players who are versatile enough to play all the 3 formats .... Dravid, along with Kallis, comes across as someone who is 'test only' player to me, while guys like Sehwag, Gambhir, Warne, Jayasuriya are more versatile and suitable to more formats

and that innings by Dravid means little when his side was totally out of the game

To prove the superiority of Test players (since I had nothing better to do), I've made a list of all the Man of the Match awards in the completed games of the IPL:

  1. McCullum
  2. MEK Hussey
  3. Maharoof
  4. DJ Hussey (x)
  5. Boucher
  6. SR Watson
  7. Sehwag
  8. Hayden
  9. YK pathan (x)
  10. Sangakarra
  11. Oram
  12. Watson
  13. Katich
  14. SR Watson
  15. Gilchrist
  16. Dhoni
  17. Jayasuriya
  18. McGrath
  19. Asnodkar (x)
  20. Marsh (x)
  21. Sehwag
  22. Kumar (x)
  23. IK Pathan
  24. Pollock
  25. Sreesanth
  26. Gilchrist
  27. Nehra
  28. Dhoni
  29. Ganguly
  30. YK Pathan(x)
  31. Balaji
  32. Ganguly
  33. Watson
  34. Marsh (x)
  35. Akhtar
  36. Jayasuriya
  37. Mishra (x)
  38. Pollock
  39. Smith

Even though the number of players with at least one Test cap make up a minority of all players in the IPL, they have won 80% of the MoM awards.
Since most of the high profile players selected in the IPL usually play most of the formats and are likely to do well so I don't see a point in the exercise that you just performed

If you really wanted to make this meaningful then it would be interesting to see how the 'test only' and those who are considered NOT suitable for the format have performed and you can add those who mostly play test matches of their countries to the list

Most of the guys in that list are versatile players and have represented their countries in most of the format. a Jayasuriya, a Sehwag, a Gambhir, a Tendulkar, a Smith, etc are also going to do well considering their versatility

Well they can't get rid of their Icon player for the first three years, any player they release has to be paid their full contracts worth and trading expensive flops won't be easy and you'll never be able to get value for them.

Apart from go all out to get KP, get Bracken back and hope they can turn the teams luck around I don't know what direction they can go. A right mess for them.
They can get rid of the icon player in the first three years if they want and if some one else is willing to take the given player. They have to ensure that the concerned player is paid the sum he was promised for 3 years. I wouldn't say that it would be impossible for Mallya to sell Dravid even at some loss if they do not look eye to eye in the future.

Finally, great to see Dravid get runs. Both my teams lost yesterday, Bangalore was to be expected. But Delhi were terribly hard done by.

No, he has not played even an ODI - in fact, I don't think he was even on the fringes before his performances here in the IPL.
Nah he was definitely on the fringes of selection before the IPL. He played in the T20 WC Final as well.

Finally going to admit Bangalore didn't auction well? Or still going to claim 'substance over style everytime'. :p

As much as I love Kallis and Dravid, I'd take the style + substance of your Watson's, Yuvraj's, Sangakkara's and Sehwag over those two in this form.

Mind you, it was Bangalore's ridiculously hilarious strategy at the auction which made me choose them in the first place, just for the hilarity of it all.

But even you must admit that your "substance over style" argument makes no sense, and in fact goes the other way. Kallis may look stylish playing those drives straight to mid off, but there's no substance in it in this format of the game.

Has played all but one T20I for India - was sick for that one.
Sorry, my bad.

I thought all the criticism that had come his way prior to Australian series had meant he wouldnt have been selected for 20/20

In any event, his performances in that format internationally have been pretty average. However, with a player of that quality, it's simply a matter of time

whats the news on Sangakara and Boucher?
Sangakkara was injured in that one match and is still sitting out. The news said at that time that he's likely to sit out for the whole series.

The team sites don't even have their own news, and only copy the news from the press agencies. Most team message boards are full of fan angst.

Ntini gets 3rd hat-trick of the tournament, although split between overs.

Re: player payments, the players are only there for the money, if you erode their confidence in getting paid on time, the whole tournament could implode (or be severly affected anyways). It's something the IPL shouldn't mess with.
