This might sound strange because we got slaughtered but im quite positive about this result. Taylor did well and showed a bit of skill. I was always confident that he had the ability to compete at this level but I was worried if he got a string of low scores he might lose a bit of confidence or get a Sinclair type mental block. With a decent score he should have got the confidence and belief that he can compete at international level.
The middle and lower order collapse was terrible but we know that our middle order of Styris and Oram is injured at the moment and so was always going to be weak today without them.
Im getting a bit worried about McCullum opening. At first I had an open mind and was willing to give him a chance, but he will have 1 or two more chances and if he fails, the calls will start coming for him to go back down.
Im worried that there is not enough time to blood Jesse Ryder before the world cup, imo he is clearly the next best option to open the batting. Ryder is just as talented as Taylor if not more so, and I think he should be in the team. The important thing for me with Ryder is that he regularly bowls 10 overs for Wellington. So with him, Astle, and Styris being able to bowl then that can be our 5th bowler, and we can stack our batting,.. Hes a lefty so it will also give us a left-right hand opening partnership.
We need experience in the middle order so Fleming at 4 is best. Experience opening with Astle and experience at 6 and 7 with Styris and Oram.
Taylor seems the goods at 3 and so the top order looks a lot stronger with him there. If our lower order recovers from their injuries then with Taylor improving our top order, it doesnt look that bad.
Ryder ( bat, bowl a little)
Astle (bat, bowl a little)
Taylor (bat)
Fleming (bat)
Fulton (bat)
Styris (bat , bowl a little)
Oram ( all rounder)
McCullum ( Wicketkeeper)
Vettori (bowling all rounder)
Bond (bowl)
Gillespie (bowl)
the only thing I might worry about is there might not be enough quality bowling. There are plenty of bowling options but maybe too many part timers. Anyway, that teams middle order wont collapse like the one today did. Much more quality much further down. That was a really long tail for NZ so its no surprise we fell over so easily. Our batting line up is one of the poorest in the world. We cant afford to have a long tail.
