Akram was the best because he was dangerous and adaptable at all stages of the game. He was a difficult new ball bowler, and later in the innings could reverse swing to devastating effect. I think his difference was that he always attacked, rarely resorted to containing like others, and was still so difficult to hit and get away for runs. He was so awkward, batsmen rarely went after him and usually played him out while attacking Waqar and the others.

Do you think that is why Waqar got such a lot of 4/5 fors? Waqar had a high E/R of 4.6 but had a great S/R. Thanks to you, now I think I know why.:)

I've got my top 3 between Warne, McGrath and Akram. I don't know which one to put first although I am leaning to Akram. What makes me hesitate is McGrath's great WC record and Warne's is even better than his - I also have a lot of fond memories for some of those matches Warne seemed to be on another planet. TBH, I'm pretty surprised Warne hasn't figured in more lists and higher up.

KaZoH0lic,

Wasim's world cup record, during the 90's, is pretty awesome.

25 213.4 815 36 4/32 4/40 22.63 3.81 35.6 2 0

Perhaps the best bowler of the '92 world cup, including THAT spell. Struggled in the 96 world cup in terms of taking wickets, but even so conceeded runs at 4 per over. Had an excellent '99 world cup and was the backbone of perhaps the strongest bowling attack pakistan has fielded.

agree.. i think pakistan's strongest team ever in a ODI was the 99 world cup..and it was because of wasim..

Its true. Waqar was never great at keeping the runs down like Wasim was, and was known for splaying it about. But when he got the ball in the right places, he was lethal, especially later in the innings with the greatest yorker ever seen.

I honestly have enjoyed watching Waqar bowl at his peak as much as any other bowler in world cricket. He looked lethal, likely to take a wicket with every delivery, like Holding did.

I'm suprised people don't talk more about Murali taking wickets off lesser sides ala Bangladesh when it comes to ODI's. People beat that horse deader than dead when talking about his performances in Tests, but there's a far greater disparity between Murali's performances against New Zealand, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe than there is against the rest in ODI's. Take those three sides out of the Murali ODI equation and his figures change far more drastically than most people realise.

None of these sides ODI class (whatever that means) now?

I have to say this was a very difficult choice to make indeed and the top 7-8 could be any order really but this is my final choice
