Heh you're lucky, there's only 2-3 people who get a bowl in our team and the pitch we played on yesterday was just atrocious. I managed to hang around for 0 not out off about 20-25 balls (I was in block mode so missed out on the odd wide full toss) whilst the other guys were batting at the 'good' end against the weaker bowling and having a swing (the faster guy took 7 wickets off 14 overs at my end - nearly all done by low bounce, other wickets were a run out and 2 caught slogs off another bowler at the end). I swear one guy was bowled by a half tracker that hit middle stump about 2 inches up... still we won (129 all out, they got 80 all out).

Very good day today

59* for the U15s in the morning, my first half-century of the season, followed by a tidy keeping display. Then I played 3rds in the afternoon and made 31 as a specialist bat, and good a pretty good catch at mid-on.

Saturday:

Chardstock 209-7 (46ovs. S. Strawbridge 112)
Upottery 213-7 (46 ovs. M. Tucker 68 S. Drew 36 D. Kennard 27* B. Smith 25 Chubb 10*)

Fantastic DCL match. I came in with 4 overs left and us needing 28 to win and to be there at the end was fantastic. We needed nine off the last over. Kennard hit the fist ball for four, the second was a dot, then off the next we ran a single. I hit the next for two, then scampered a legbye and Kennard sent the last ball to the boundary to win the match. It was incredibly exhilarating to come away with the victory when we had looked finished at 14-3. It was one of the best games I have played in.

Sunday:

Trull 190-6 (40 ovs. Chubb 3-0-21-1)
Upottery 171 a/o (36 ovs, R. Foxwell 57, Chubb 0)

This was a really ****** game at a dreadful ground against a pack of utter *****s. Their petulance and bickering in the field led to our captain, who was batting 11, just walking off when the bowler took a return catch, even though it was off a no-ball. I doubt we will ever play Trull again. Their captain had no control over them at all and it was throughly unpleasant. The stupidest thing was they had the upper hand over us throughout the match. My bowling was crap and I opened and fourth ball got one that bounced more than I was expecting and popped a catch up into the leg side, where their fielder took a one-handed diving catch. It happens. real come-down from Saturday though.

On Wednesday I will be playing for my old club side Kilmington, who I left after getting too old for their U15s youth side. My mates at school got me to come and play for Upottery, who had a U17s side, and I haven't looked back since, though I play maybe three friendlies a year for Kilmington.

I have got an important match on Friday for RACS against Bromley town. Last game of the season and they are top and we are second with only 1 point behind them. It will be definitely an interesting and tense match and hopefully we will win.

I live in Trull! Don't play for them for the reasons you stated above, what a small world!

Wednesday:

Worcester Nomads 190 a/o (D. Lavender 5-34, Chubb 3 CT)
Kilmington 191-9 (Chubb 0)

I really dislike playing at Kilmington, because when I played there I was much worse than I am now and they still think I can't do anything on the field. The captain thought I didn't even know where square leg, gully and backward point were- he pointed to the position and said "go there". I took three skying catches on the boundary, including one that I had to run about ten metres and intercept, and that made them sit up a bit. But I still can't make runs for them, getting a third-baller off a bad shot batting five, my least favourite position and one where I have now scored 1 run in three innings this year. It was a good match but I didn't feel part of it at all and I hope they don't want me to play for them again because I have had enough of being patronised.

Thursday

Gordano Valley 271 a/o (B. Inglis 3-31)
Upottery 248-9 (Chubb 45, S. Drew 41, R. Spiller 35)

This was a really good match. The outfield was like lightning and the pitch was flat, and Gordano's opener, who had a triple bypass op last year, smashed a hundred off about 50 balls. In the end we did well to keep them down to 271. We felt we would be able to chase it if we got off to a good start. I opened and hit five fours and one six. We were 135-1 off 17 overs when I pulled a ball round the corner and ran a single. I looked back and saw that I had dislodged the bails with my back leg as I pivoted. I couldn't believe I had done that. There was a fifty, even a hundred there for the taking. We still could have won but their bowlers kept it tight in the last five and we didn't quite make it. If I had stayed in with Spiller, who got out three balls after me, I think we would have done.

good stuff Chubb, fielding in the kilmington game and battingwise in the last game!
keep it up:)

I played Skegness Grammar School yesterday, with a mixed team with the youngest being 11 in our team, the oldest being me (17)
we fielded first, they got to 205 of 45 overs(me 1/14 in 5)
then we batted, wen't crap, I got myself to 21 then got out caught...wasnt out..fielder dived at square leg...the ball being between his stomach and the ground..he claimed it and umpire gave it. 1st innings with my new bat and it played like a beast! its a bit lighter then my last bat, and it benefits my bat speed hugely!

tomorrow im off to England and supposedly my first match in england will be on sunday :) awesome stuff!

Many congrats Tarick, I can't even imagine what it must be like to make a fifty. My last attempt at the big five-o ended a mere fifty runs short of my target.

South Devon League Division Four! I'd get runs in that league.

Saturday:

Upottery 83 a/o (B. Foxwell 36, Chubb 13*)
Churchinford 84-2

We were just blown away by some of the best bowling we had ever faced in our division. It was swinging like a boomerang, and bouncing very variably in humid conditions. I came out to bat at 58-8, and second ball from bowler Acheson swung from outside leg onto middle, kicked off a length, glanced off the shoulder of my bat and struck me on the cheek, where I still have a bruise from it. It was very testing but I tend to get pumped when we are in a situation like that so I just tried to battle as Foxwell had a slog. When he got out I was left with the number 11. He saw off three deliveries from Acheson and I took five off the first five deliveries of the next over, taking a single to leave no. 11 facing one ball, which promptly bowled him. I was still proud that I hadn't got out, though.

Sunday:

Tedburn St. Mary 261-9 (Chubb 8-0-41-0)
Upottery 199 a/o (G. Kennard 57*, S. Bath 33, M. Joyce 27, Chubb 23)

Although this doesn't look like a good result, we were fielding a severely weakened team containing 3 under 11s, 1 under 13 (who is the first team wicketkeeper and worth his place on merit) and a nuff-nuff, so really we did well. Tedburn is a nice little ground near the edge of Dartmoor, though they only have an artificial strip laid (thanks to a football club) so that the setting sun shines right into everyone's eyes. Our weakened side was the reason I bowled a full complement of overs though I should have been hit for more than I eventually did and maybe could have got a wicket or two. I came out to bat on 20-2 with a U11 at the other end. I tried to give him a go, and when he got out for 3 I started playing more aggressively. Unfortunately a 50/50 mix up ran me out going for a single to deep square (albeit on a short boundary) I think if we hadn't hesitated we would have had a run. We were 101-9 but the captain was in and he got us up to a respectable score in the circumstances.

Monday:

Tiffin**** 192-9 (K. Balasubrimaniam 130)
Kilmington 129 a/o (R. Watkins 57, Extras 41, Chubb 13)

This was another big test. The wicket was very dry and very bouncy, and all of the Tiffin**** batsmen struggled except Balasubrimaniam, who was awesome and didn't give a single chance. If it hadn't been for him I don't know what would have happened. I batted three and was in on the fourth ball of the match. It was a test compared to Churchinford, only this time combating the bounce rather than the swing, and I tried. You really had to grind out the runs because the two bowlers were magnificent, one very fast and bouncing it up at the ribcage (though he gave many of the extras in wides and byes) and the other, slower but still nippy, bowling a suffocatingly consistent off-stump line. After about twelve overs I finally nicked one to the slips, where the fielder pulled off a one-handed diving catch. Kilmington had several first-team batsmen but they couldn't get the ball away either and they subsided. I ended up with the second-top score off the bat, but I was always living on borrowed time out in the middle.

Edit: It's Tiffin t i t s. There badge is, believe it or not, two half-circles like this UU with a dot in each circle!

That Balasubrimaniam holds the school record for Tiffin School, 190-odd IIRC. Apparently in that same game he took several stumpings of the fast bowlers - was he keeping nor not?

Walsall CC U15s 158-4
Smith 64, Davies 2-24

Sutton Coldfield CC U15s 154 all out
Ahmed 82, Crampton 31*

The league decider, and we lose by 4 runs :( We needed 8 off the last over, with two wickets left, following Ahmed's heroics, which rescued us from 36-4. I took a single off the first ball to give the number ten strike. He got a single as well, then I dug out a yorker for another one. He produced another yorker to beat the number ten, leaving the last wicket partnership to get 5 off 2. The penulitmate ball is beauty, an outswinger just short of length that he did well not to nick. I thought about attempting to sneak a bye, but decided it would be suicidal. We now needed five off the last ball, a tie wouldn't be good enough. The last ball is a decent length ball, and is hoofed in the general direction of deep-midwicket, where a spectacular but slightly irrelevant catch was taken. I was pretty gutted at the other end, and there was a sort of Brett Lee-Andrew Flintoff moment with the bowler who got Ahmed out.

Very disappointed to say the least, that loss to Water Orton a few weeks ago has really come back to haunt us. At least were entered in two leagues this season, and we're still unbeaten in the other.

Upottery 113 a/o (D. Prettejohn 23, Chubb 19)
Journey Men 114-8

Sometimes the low scoring ones are the best ones. The pitch was really bad with variable bounce and the bowling was very good as well. It was a real struggle to score runs once more. My innings took 16 overs though I didn't have too much of the strike. We were 50-2 when, looking to accelerate, I sliced a lofted drive to mid-on. An unnecessary run-out and some fine catching from the opposition later and we were all out for a tiny score. However, with the pitch like it was we thought we had a chance and it went right to the wire. I spent most of the innings fielding at silly mid off and I took a low catch there, but another delivery balloned off the bat and just beat my dive to get to it. At the end it was very tense but they just edged it, if we had scored 140, we would have won.

The opposition were, shall we say, from the upper end of the social scale. Now, I've played against lots of teams like that, but most are friendly even if they are a bit up themselves and it was the same with this lot.

Sunday

Feniton 237 (Frankpitt 110)
Exeter 238-6 (Johnston 128*, Pickup 16)

It started off pretty hideously for us, and me in particular. The final ball of the first over was heading towards the long off boundary, and I was racing to catch it up. I stopped it inches inside the boundary and, such is the nature of momentum, kept going and tumbled forwards. Unfortunately, there was a large fence about a foot beyond the line. Below are the pictures of a) the fence and b) my head after our altercation. I think it's a score draw.

After that, their batters spent some time testing out the houses around the ground for ball resistance, until one slog too many led to a wicket and a more sedentary spell, before their number three cut loose on his way to 110, again clearing the fence and the netting and the house behind the shot in the photo below. Next ball, however, went straight up and I held onto it at midwicket having had plenty of time to think about dropping it, and how you catch with one hand being covered in plasters (more after effects of the earlier altercation). That triggered a collapse, and despite me dropping one catch running in at midwicket, Feniton only made 237 having threatened 300 when Frankpitt was hitting. So glad I caught that skier.

We started fitfully, losing regular wickets to the point where I came in after 25 overs with the score 145-5. The plan for the next overs was hit the loose balls hard and run the singles. I ran, and ran, and ran. 11-year-old Theo, who was watching the end, said I was 'really quick between the wickets'. We added 89 for the sixth wicket as Johnston hit the loose balls much further than I did. I was run out in the 38th over coming back for a second to try keeping him on strike, but by then I had made 16 - all run, and twelve of them singles - and we were four runs short. He hit the next ball for four, straight down the ground, and we'd won.

The Colts in the team (one U14, two U13s and an U12 playing his first senior game) decided that my bang on the head had made me into a better batsman. Right now I don't care.

The Exeter CC Midweek/Thirds/Sunday skipper hasn't forgotten a spell of full tosses that cost 3-0-49-0 two summers ago. I've been allowed two overs this year, and they were bowled at excessive loop to try enticing a shot out of a number eleven... I keep trying to get a trundle, but right now I'm in the team as a batsman!
