Your English Cricket Season: 2008

Tomm NCCC

International 12th Man
Well, if the word "Bouncebackabilitywithavengance" existred, I think it would be used to describe Notts, Charlie Shreck with 8-31 as Middlesex humiliated, posting a mere 49 in their second innings, the lowest total ever recorded by a top division team. Notts won by an inns and 38 runs

Ahem....

I'm playing both days of the weekend this week and the new 4th team captain said i might be bowling to spells of 5 overs tommorow, which would be a first.

Had my first game for seconds today, against one of the weaker teams in the division.. Didn't keep that well, dropped a catch and missed a stumping, but I was pretty pleased with my 12* off 10 to hit the winning runs

Ivybridge 174-9 [40] - Brooklyn 3/36, Thurgood 2/31
Exeter Uni IV 111 [35.2] - Broooklyn 21, Pickup 18

I was very pleased with our bowling perfomance - very tight all round, not many extras, good catching. I kept on the grounds of none other available, and conceded three byes on a pitch which was up-and-down - all of them standing up to medium pacers. Signed off with a catch from a nick from the opening bowler from the penultimate ball of the innings, not before I'd had one very very loud leg-side shout turned down.

In reply, we started nicely, and then all four wheels simultaneously fell off. 31-1 became 70-8 and with 12 overs remaining, we needed 104. Not particularly concerned by this, Brooky took the majority of strike and kept us close(ish) to the asking rate before falling caught behind and leaving us 94-9. This brought Thurgood to the crease - and he has one shot, the forward defensive. There was only one way we'd make 80 in 8 overs, and that was if I got them all.

One boundary, swept to the 85-yard midwicket boundary and into the river the other side, got me started, before another sweep went finer and I enjoyed the novelty of having a fielder put back for me. I then decided that the seamer at the other end was ripe for coming down the track to, and one off drive went for two before a swish through midwicket reached the ropes. A single brought me my highest score ever, and kept me the strike, but with 5 overs to go, we needed 64. I blocked the first ball of the next over, aimed a huge swipe at the second, and got bowled. Oh well...

Yesterday:

Upottery 180-7 40ovs. (Chubb 48, D. Broom 34, S. Bath 21*) Chard 186-3 31ovs.

I have to confess I have never made a fifty, so I was extremely disappointed not to get one. The problem was that Chard have an electronic scoreboard and I could see I was within one shot of it. It also means more to score a fifty for Upottery, because it is the only way you can earn a club cap.

It was the best innings I have played by some way. Unfortunately I also got out with ten overs left (having opened- I didn't get too much of the strike) and we didn't get the 200+ I was aiming for. Our bowling was dreadful and it was never really a contest after Chard reached 90-1 off 12 overs.

Yesterday:

Olympia 170 all out. (r van Zanten 3/20 in 5)(F.Kingma 2/8 in 7)
VCC II 110 all out (S.van Zanten 40, R van Zanten 25)
I bowled 0/33 off 4 :/ my 2nd ball was dropped by slip...the guy made my bowling figures..good balls he dispatched for 6 or 4..bad balls, he missed or gave chances with it...( the dropped catch was a ripper though) the left hand right hand combination fked me up a bit to...changing from round to over all the time doesnt help your game.
and when batting I was no 10..I came in at 80/8 I got out at 100/9 scoring 2 runs...and blocking Shane Warne's brother out(well that how I fel about him...very good leggie he was there south african player coach) good running between the wickets and I did my best to keep the other guy on strike and not get out, i did on a seam bowler trying to block a ball outside off stump, bat wasnt straight enough and gave a simple chance to 2nd slip :(
damnit :(

Cricket's a funny game.

Simba CC 135 [34.5] Pickup 4/34, Harper 2/11
Exeter University IV 136-6 [24.4] Harper 40, Cox 18*

I started keeping, dropped a catch first ball (legside, diving), and proceeded to catch about three balls in the next eleven overs until I abandoned it as a bad job. I then bowled seven overs of long hops, half volleys, wides, a couple of good balls and the occasional bouncer, saw two batsman smear me straight to deep square leg and two chip it up for the keeper.

This game makes no sense.

Exeter University IV 206-8 [40] (Gallienne 82*, Biddick 30)
Ashburton CC 202-8 [40]

I made 9 as part of a 28-run stand for the eighth wicket - two fours - before being caught off a skier at deep point as I tried to hit their opening bowler over cover in the 37th over. They were always in touch with the run rate with wickets in hands, and it was late and dark so we were banned from using our quicks. I then managed to sledge out their number six (on 50) with 24 needed off 28.

I decided to ask him if the nets at the end of the pitch had ever been cleared before. He said yes, I said that'd be a nice way to finish it, wouldn't it? Next ball - straight up in the air, drops between bowler and mid off. Ball after - clean bowled having a moo. Kept it tightish thereafter and held on - conceded 8 byes in the 40, but was not at all happy with 4 no-balls for taking the ball in front of the stumps.

I also managed something that could pass as wit - one of our fielders said something about building pressure, can't remember exactly what, and the bowler said it sounded like a Bond film. Next ball is a hideously loopy pie about six feet (yes) outside off. Me: "Moonraker".

Finally, we set a record for youngest EU4 player, as 11-y-o Xander played for us because we only had ten. I expect he'll be taking the mickey out of his brother in the Ashburton side for a few days.

Tedburn St. Mary 151 a/o (28ovs, Chubb 8-1-52-2)
Upottery 154-5 (37ovs. M. Button-Stephens 65)

Following on from my best ever innings, my best ever bowling spell. In actual fact, it was better than the figures suggest as well. I had two catches dropped off my bowling, a close LBW shout and several play and misses. I started off just bowling offbreaks, but one of the guys suggested I ought to throw in some faster ones and it worked really well. 10-year-old Shane took two wickets for us, as well as taking his first ever Upottery men's team catch.

We have a "rotation policy", so as I bowled my full compliment of overs (also a first) i was down to bat ten and wasn't needed. Nice to finally play in a victory, though.

On Wednesday we are going down to Dartmouth to play the Britannia Royal Naval College, where one of our players is completing an officer's course.

How come your Colts can take senior wickets but none against other U11s?

If you've got any properly good ones, make sure they get nominated for the East Devon trials this year!

How did your UC day out go? E-mail me if you don't wanna give the result away to the masses!

The Budleigh U11 coach said our attack was the best his side had faced all year. Our Colts bowling is pretty good actually, it's just the batting that lets them down.

If you don't mind I'll keep the result of the UC match secret, because it was very close and I don't want to spoil the viewing come broadcast day. Paxo did actually say what my sig says to us. It was a fantastic experience.

Well make sure you get the district trials nominations forms completed - I'm running the East Devon U12s next year, and I want to make sure I get to pick from the widest possible base!
