Worst Nation of the decade?

Well I'm not saying Dalrymple was good, but I dispute that he should be close to worst-of-the-decade. Surely we can find someone worse than "not quite up to it".
Well I didn't want to pick any Bangladeshis or Zimbabweans, or players who played less than a handful of matches. I suppose there's a New Zealander who can put his hand up for a callup.

Haa...allright no jokes aside. Look back at the test he played:

SCG 08: Why in god's name was he picked there as Symonds replacement?. The better options ATT was to probably pick North or D Hussey to bat @ 6. Or even drop Hauritz & pick 4 seamers in Johnson/Bollinger/Hilfy/Siddle, since before the test only Johnson was bowling well all series for AUS.

SA 09: Right 4 proper seamers should have played all 3 tests. Ok Bollinger got injured before the 1st test, but why wasn't Nannes called up?. Nonsense..

ENG 09: What was his use on that tour?. Another batsman in Hodge would have made far more sense. But the selectors disgraceful treatment of him again was on display..

So what, Pathan and RP were swinging the ball everywhere. You can't solely blame the pitch on Tait's failures there, he seriously bowled poo.
I'm not denying he bowled crap. But as i said he was ONLY picked because the talk was that Perth test was going to be a flyer (seeing him bowl in T20 vs NZ a month earlier @ Perth also aided in fuelling that hype). It was no where close to that pace wise, so it was mixture of lack of Perth flyer + general poor bowling.

Talking about the swing IND got yea it was there. But if you remember Tait was bowling 4th change so any conventional swing he wouldn't/couldn't have utilised it with an old ball..

aussie advocating 4 seamers? Nearly fell off my chair

Dalrymple wasn't that bad. He finished his career terribly but he looked the part for a while before that. Wasn't really in a role that suited him much but he did okay.
Yeah, him and Yardy are actually both tidy county-level batsman who bowl a little fill-in slow stuff (might even go so far as to call Dalrymple's "spin", but would make no such concession to Yardy) who somehow found themselves playing as specialist ODI spinners.

Furball

Evil Scotsman
Michael Slater?

Forgot about Brett Dorey in the ODI's actually, was always fun watching him bowl  Remember the talk about him before he played. Turned out to just be tall and slow.
In terms of a "worst team of the decade", Slater's by far the worst specialist bat who actually had a decent run in the side, the fact I think he should be a shoe in speaks volumes about the performance of the Australian side during the decade.

Well despite you already having a 'keeper I daresay that Gareth Hopkins deserves a spot somewhere. 56 runs in 14 ODI's & iirc he has made appearances as specialist batsman

Haha yeah. remember Glenn Turner backing him as our reserve ODI keeper in the media and i was like "really, oh thank god Vettori is a selector now".

I don't think Hopkins is as bad as he's appeared because in the past few seasons he's played up the order for Auckz in FC and done okay, but he doesnt appear to be an ODI batsman at all.

Good keeper though, definitely should be the reserve for tests.

Yeah I think he's one of the better batsman in the country, just no good down the order in one dayers

If he was picked for his batting, I'd consider having him in as a specialist. Hard to argue with Ambrose's almost anonymity in his 5 ODIs though.

They had Franklin & Redmond still fit iirc. Franklin replaced Ryder in the above match.
He also played this match prior to the one above,

3rd Match, Group B: South Africa v New Zealand at Centurion, Sep 24, 2009 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com

Also,
3rd ODI: Australia v New Zealand at Hobart, Dec 20, 2007 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com
1st ODI: South Africa v New Zealand at Durban, Nov 25, 2007 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com

Curiuos point that you make though, upon investigation I have discovered that all of his 14 ODI appearances have been outside of NZ

Yes, in some cases there may indeed have been no other option in the squad, while overseas. But then you question why he was picked in the squad anyway. Who picks a specialist wicketkeeper to back up a wicketkeeper-batsman in an ODI squad? Really is horrible selection on the part of NZ. I feel sorry for Hopkins for being asked to better than he is.
