Here you go. 2 byes in the day...

82.1 Saggers to Astle, bye: two runs, well down the legside, Jones dives
towards his left and unable to stop it peoperly

If I remember rightly, it was an absolute full-length dive and saved two rather than cost two.
Yeah, he's kept pretty well in the test to this point

Now is the time to come up with the bat (provided Hoggard doesn't do one of his specials and pull us up a lot closer before Jones even comes in)

Just speculating, but would it be madness to suggest that Jones would make a viable specialist batsman for England? That way they would have a superior keeper in Read...

Not madness - just not really sensible (given the stroke he played to get out)

McCullum has been the better overall keeper in this series because Jones was seriously poor at Lords & then average at Headingly.

If NZ ever find an outstanding young keeper, I believe McCullum will actually drop the gloves and become a specialist batsman.

Sorry, but McCullum wasn't that hot at either venue either, and to call Jones average at Headingley is harsh when you consider his second innings effort...

McCullum was far better than Jones at Headingley. I was there. He made some excellent stops and Jones left a lot to be desired.

he is good enough to play as a specialist batsman although i find it hard to understand why he should.....we have 6 batsman who are certainities in the side and collingwood in the reserves, so theres no real place to have a specialist keeper and a keeper batsman in there. and i dont think jones' keeping is that bad at all, he was quite brilliant in that 2nd innings at headingly and hes been quite tidy in the 3rd test as well. he will steadily improve and become a better keeper just like Stewart.

Jones will definitely improve, and he should continue wk'ing. When Dravid was asked to keep, it was just an experiment and a temporary arrangement till someone came through. He has improved considerably and has been taking difficult catches, though he still concedes too many extra runs. And 2 years on, it looks like Dravid will continue.

totally agreed.. was just throwing some random thoughts into the air...

Yeah sure Jones made that ONE great take, which in fairness was an excellent take..but that doesn't hide the fact that during those 2 tests he was quite frankly sub-standard. Jones has improved in the 3rd test however.

McCullum has trouble keeping to Vettori, but that's no surprise considering he's hardly had to keep to Vettori since he's been on the scene..Vettori's hardly bowled! let alone keeping for Wiseman at Canterbury...Wiseman is usually being hit out of the park so McCullum doesn't get to do much glovework.

Lords and Headingly probably the 2 worst places to keep in england though. There aren't many grounds in the world as bad as them 2.

Well let's give McCullum & Jones some credit...there were times when the ball was impossible to stop but there were other times when they made average attempts.
A number of times I saw Jones grass a ball that practically went straight to him.

I wonder if there is a case for NZ to drop a batsman i.e. McMillan...play McCullum as a specialist batsman & give the gloves to Gareth Hopkins who is a very good keeper..more a specialist keeper. Infact I was pleasantly surprised that he scored 70 odd runs against Leic's last week..it might be a possible option in the future.

And the 2nd innings at Headingley - that ton seems to make him feel he belongs and relaxed him I think.

no doubt...but he may have also become more relaxed because the series had been won. Potentially if he gets into some tight matches and he makes 1 mistake he may open up...but I hope for his sake, that won't be the case.

i was referring to his glovework..not his batting.

He's batted well through the entire series.
