Ambrose wasnt consistently excellent after 94. He was a reduced force. Kinda think you need to be top game most of the decade to say you own it.You need both consistency and ATG series, think Ambrose has both in suffecient amount, while Lara was lacking in extended excellence.
Ambrose from 95-99 was a reduced force but still elite, it wasn't Lara esque for me to subtract a lot.Ambrose wasnt consistently excellent after 94. He was a reduced force. Kinda think you need to be top game most of the decade to say you own it.
Tendulkar played one series against Pak. SA yes mixed bag.Top 4 teams of the 90s were Aus, RSA, Pak and WI. Against the other 3 teams, Amby was good to great. Sachin great vs Aus and WI but mediocre vs Pak and RSA. Edge to Ambrose for me.
I think it's a bit silly to say that. Sachin played them thrice in the 90s and played literally his Greatest innings Ever in that Series. Calling it mediocre is pure average reading imho.Top 4 teams of the 90s were Aus, RSA, Pak and WI. Against the other 3 teams, Amby was good to great. Ambrose wasnt elite 95 to 99. Lara was worse though in his off phase yes.Ambrose from 95-99 was a reduced force but still elite, it wasn't Lara esque for me to subtract a lot.
Many of the argument for Ambrose are like that.Calling it mediocre is pure average reading imho.
An innings really, but it was a 3 matcher.Didn’t Sachin have a good series against Pak on rank turners in the 90s?
He still came up against Australia and a diminished England pretty well in that phase, other than bowling less against B tier teams and an injury influenced tour of South Africa (averaged 23), there isn't much wrong with it.Ambrose wasnt elite 95 to 99. Lara was worse though in his off phase yes.
Ambrose overall:Tendulkar played one series against Pak. SA yes mixed bag.
And how was Ambrose good against Pakistan? He underperformed in two out of the three series he faced against them. Against SA was a middling series thanks to injury.
It's really only Aus.
Spanked in Pakistan. But anyways the rest of the decade was pretty quiet for him, no real big budget performances he was known for in the early 90s.He still came up against Australia and a diminished England pretty well in that phase, other than bowling less against B tier teams and an injury influenced tour of South Africa (averaged 23), there isn't much wrong with it.
You otherwise reflexively take the opposite side to me, is it?I already am feeling I took the wrong side in a debate regarding Ambrose with Subs present....
Great innings does not negate the performance overall. However it was only 3 test, so I choose to ignore Pakistan. He was poor vs RSA though even with a couple great innings.I think it's a bit silly to say that. Sachin played them thrice in the 90s and played literally his Greatest innings Ever in that Series. Calling it mediocre is pure average reading imho.
I never said Ambrose was poor. I would call him middling versus Pakistan. You could argue Tendulkar was the same vs SA.Ambrose overall:
averaged 24 vs Pak sr 63= good
averaged 19 vs RSA sr 53 = great
averaged 21 vs Aus sr 54= great
If you want to make the case that Ambrose underperformed or whatever overall vs Pak/RSA because my guest but he was far from poor. Sachin was downright poor vs RSA.![]()
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Ambrose's 90s vs Pak and RSA he was good overall. He still came up against Australia and a diminished England pretty well in that phase, other than bowling less against B tier teams and an injury influenced tour of South Africa (averaged 23), there isn't much wrong with it.
