Who is the best all rounder in the world at the moment

Arjun

Cricketer Of The Year
I am a fan of all-rounders and these would have to be the best. Please don't mention a certain bits-and-pieces man who gets a 5-wicket haul or a 50 or 100 once in 4 years as one.

Pollock is the best bowling all-rounder. He can pick himself as a bowler in any team. That said, his batting is also very good. He's never got much of a chance batting so low, but he's still quite good. Look at his batting average- 33 odd is good for a bowler of average 23, isn't it? Surprising nobody rates him much as an all-rounder, since he's the most relevant player in any team. He deserves an appreciation society. He's good in both Tests and ODI's, which makes him very effective.

Kallis is a top-6 quality batsman and can do a good job as a support bowler, but his bowling is nothing special. He's in great batting form, though he bowls too many short and wide deliveries.

Bowling all-rounders are very effective, since they take the bulk of the wickets, and also score a few runs to support the lead batsmen. Any team with a bowling all-rounder is a team well served. Pollock has served SA well, Akram has helped Pakistan a lot, though he hasn't done much justice to his batting, Cairns can turn any match on its head when in top form.

Wicketkeeping all-rounders are another lot who can add balance to the team and change the course of matches. Adam Gilchrist is definitely the best batsman in international cricket and given that, he's exceptionally good as a wicketkeeper. Stewart was also quite good, though he was never as effective. Same for Adam Parore. Sadly, everyone in command thinks that the wicketkeeper has to bat as well as a top-6 batsman, and make a mess of selections, especially the India, since such wicketkeepers are very rare.

That's stupid to say things like Dah it's Kallis!
I'd go as far as to say that Symonds may well be as good.... But Gilchrist definately has the wood on him by far!
Symonds isn't a regular enoug bowler or anywhere near as good a batsman.

Gilchrist, although a very good bat, is by no means a great keeper, so cannot really be classed alongside a man who would probably make the SA side a specialist bowler.

well i'd have to agree Kallis is the best "All-Rounder" at the moment, but as my name suggests what about the wickies? how many more gillies and andy flowers will there be in the world before people realise wickies get picked because they can bat well and not because the only thing we notice of them is when you hear voices in the background (usually to spin bowlers but anyway) and when they make catches and stumpings (although they do get noticed when they miss them a little more)

by no means a great wicket keeper, who are you measuring him to marsh, healy? anyone who can keep to warne (especiialy), gillespie, mcgrath, lee etc.. without hardly any errors has got to be a great wicket keeper

Yeah..like Sachin Tendulkar is the best legspinner in the world :)

I like this 'absolute absoluteness' some people possess. :p

Gilchrist may not be the best batsman in International cricket, but he is obviously very talented and among the best batsmen in the world. He is also a very good wicketkeeper.

Its amazing how we decide on the best, the greatest, the all time great just on the basis of current /last performance. On this basis...

After his triple century Sehwag was the best batsman India has ever had.

After his fifty against Aussies, Pathan is the best all rounder barring Kapil

After his leg side diving stumping, Karthik was the best keeper in India

After his hundred in Pakistan, Yuvraj was the most esciting talent on the horizon.

Same for fans from other countries for their stars. Isnt it possible to see a star, a great talent even when it hasnt scored a big hundred or run through a side ? Cant a great talent or a star fail ? Does it take away its talent or shine just because it has met with failure in a game where a batsman (particularly) doesnt get another chance ?

Conversely, do a couple of excellent performances, or even a couple of series of good performances , make for dethroning greats of many years ?

I wonder

All those saying Gilchrist - if his batting were eg an average of 20-25, would he still get in the team?

Barney Rubble

International Coach
Freddie Flintoff - eats bowlers for breakfast, batsmen for lunch and slip catches for tea.

*chomp* Omari Banks *chomp chomp* mmmmmmmm, tasty....... :flex:

No he wouldn't because he is not the best keeper in Australia. He is mainly there for his batting, the fact he is an above average keeper is a bonus.

it's not based on his last performances...it's based on his last few performances..if you look at the thread title, it says "who is the best all rounder in the world AT THE MOMENT"

if we dont use current AT THE MOMENT figures, we are not addressing the question at hand!

of course, one innings doesnt mean anything, but the past season, flintoff has been in phenomal form, and kallis hasn't done as much (that i know off, and admitedly, i haven't followed SA's last few games very closely)

Shoaib Malik has been batting extremely well recently, and he's consistently taking 2-5 wickets a match at a reasonable economy.

my vote goes to abdur razzaq
At the moment I think that Razzaq and Flintoff are the best batting allrounders, however their are people like Cairns / Kallis / Gayle who perform at times, and are more of a even mix as opposed to being dominant in one of the fields.

One should not forget the likes of Afridi, who can still make huge runs in a very short time.

My vote for the modern day is for Abdur Razzaq as well. But I do have a liking for the way Vettori is progressing in the batting department.
