Which Aust player likes to go on field with a toasted sanga in his pocket?

hm i think you're looking through nostalgia lenses. he was an irl internet troll who excused australias overseas failings as 'lol only pace and bounce counts' and if you buy into the 'gentlemens sport' lie we tell ourselves he was all for broken arms before the hughes tragedy/sandpapergate set the establishment backpedalling on the identity of the australian side.

if anything he would have made australias eventual first home loss in ages uglier, because lehmann would have acted out and the opposition team wouldn't need to play with a conscience.

lehmann was very effective for home results and results in overseas conditions most familliar for australia but he was no better than langer in alien conditions and his carrying on was always going to end with something messy to clean up like sandpapergate. there were already near misses.

it was completely unnecessary too. cummins is the best in the world without any of the dribble lehmann encouraged.
I honestly get the feeling Starc is now mentally messed up by all the stuff from the media, esp. the ex-players. Not just Warne with his sledging, but so many with their "he has to be aggressive, has to go after the batsmen etc." From all accounts, he was one of the nicest guys playing cricket in Australia even around 2014 or so, and forcing a guy like that to be someone else and I guess now in trying to go to the other extreme, he is right now nowhere mentally. I dunno if that plays into how his bowling suddenly seems to go missing etc. Even now I heard Mitch Johnson go "he has to be more angry and bowl faster" nonsense. I think what he needs is a bit of peace really and some quiet time where he can rediscover what he does best as a bowler. It will be a shame if he never recovers.

He's just had a bad summer. It happens. With luck, he goes away in the off-season and he works on whatever small technical quirks with his wrist position and action caused him to so consistently lose his radar from the very first games he played in the Shield months back.

Hb is right though about it being total bull**** that Warne and others tried to tell him to be meaner. Warnes an idiot
Oh yeah but that's been a constant through his career, and he's surely long since learned to ignore it. It's not as if "he was meaner" was why he came good in Tests after about 2015.

I mean, it depends on the person and his basic character IMO. For a guy like Haze, it seems perfectly in character to scowl and sledge and do all that, but if a very nice guy (from all accounts) is gonna have to try and do those things because for some reason that makes you a better bowler, that is beyond idiotic even given one of the origins was Shane Warne's mouth.

Since Johnson retired I have been waiting for the day that Starc would start growing a handlebar in movember and have a similar menacing gold patch at the end of his career. I think he is another mo-before-form kind of guy.

starc's a fundamentally different bowler to johnson tho. johnson pre-god mode bowled fast cutter type stuff across the right hander mixed in with bouncers. starc is primarily a swing bowler who happens to be 150kph and really tall. being a swing bowler in australia is a challenging experience, so it's no surprise he goes for runs sometimes.

I can't believe Langer is still talking to the media about this. god he's such a baby when something he doesn't like happens

Is there a consensus for why Starc changed his action? I wonder if that might be a factor in negating the swing he previously got

Looking for more accuracy, I believe. Not sure if that is best. At his best, he is the best kind of scattergun coz he bowls 150+ which means you gotta be pretty damn good as a batsman to put away even the loose stuff, and because of the bad ball good ball routine, his good balls often got him wickets. He seems to have sacrificed that movement for more accuracy but it really is not a great choice for tests. And he risks becoming less good in the LO formats as well, where he was basically God tier.
