We will make them grovel - The Greigy

Norwood's on Fire
Over the last eight months or so, there has been a lot of smack talked by England and India fans ahead of this series. So much so that an old classic needs a whole thread of its own for us to debate.

As such, we need to pick a winner - the 2011 England V India Greigy for the worst prediction. Originally I was going to find as many quotes as I could and let you pick a winner, but why should I get all the fun?

So here's the plan. You find a quote that you think deserves the Greigy, you post it in here. Make sure you quote it including the link, or if it's from a locked thread include a hyperlink so that people have the chance to view it in context if required.

Over the next 4 or 5 days, keep the posts coming in. Depending on how many we get, myself and the first India-supporting volunteer to express an interest in the position (in the interests of impartiality) will whittle this down to a shortlist which you the people can then vote on in a public poll. The winning post gets the Greigy and as a special prize will go into my signature!

Now before anyone thinks I am trolling, this need not be an anti-Indian crusade. There are plenty of bad, bad tips from England fans over the past few months, a lot focusing on how Broad isn't Test-standard etc. So if you find a post that you think is worthy, quote it in here. I will be posting a few.

Finally, here are a couple of threads outside the subforum to get you started:

http://www.cricketweb.net/forum/cricket-chat/49113-england-can-beat-india-every-day-week-gough.html

The eligible time period starts with the beginning of the Darren Gough thread. Have fun.

My first nomination btw:

3-1 prediction is definitely not going to come true- how can you expect all games to end in a result?
1-1 would be the best bet.
Plus English bowling is overrated- people are Now making it sound like an ATG attack.
Broad, Tremlett, Swann aren't far ahead of Sree, Ishant and Harbi outside SC.

Score: 2-0 to India, with one test being marred by poor weather, and the other by India's superb defensive batting in the 2nd innings
Most runs: Sachin Tendulkar (about 500)
Most wickets: Zaheer Khan (about 30)
Most catches: I don't care.
Biggest innings: match-winning double century by Tendulkar in the first innings in our 2nd win of the series
Best bowling: a cheap 6-fer or 7-fer by Tremlett when for the only time in the series we are packed below 250 in the first innings (in the test where we shall display brilliant defensive batting in the 2nd innings to save a defeat) :(
MOTS (Eng) Duncan Fletcher
MOTS (Ind) Sachin Tendulkar
Axed: Broad
Surprise pick: Finn
Random prediction: All of Dravid, Tendulkar and Raina to average over 60 with the bat in the series

And just for fun, the CW version:

Country with the most infracted poster: India (our celebrations might be odd) :p
Everything besides Dravid averaging >60 was wrong :p

An English and Indian view...

Broad's not our 2nd best pace bowler.
Me thinks retaining a certain trophy against a #5 side might be getting to people's heads.
But you have to say... kudos to Burgey! Not a bad prediction so far out...

Have to agree with Gough really. India are rapidly aging, frankly. Turning into Dad's Army really, and only have one decent bowler right now. England 3-1.

Can't see India losing the series.

I think India will win as they have been so good for so long now. They have Raina and Yuvraj who are great players and hit lots of sixers.
I see the English media has already billed this as the contest between the top 2 Cricketing sides. I wonder how South Africa feel about being shoved aside like that.

This is up there with the "England are gonna win the world-cup this time" routine the media subjects us to in practically all the sports they compete in....

I can't read anything on the English media these days without cringing.

I look forward to seeing them fall on their arse.....again (as usual). It gives me hope!

England will never be number 1 test playing nation again. I say that with quite a bit of confidence. If and when India relinquish the top spot, it will be to South Africa or some other worthy nation. What have England won...ever? Exactly my point. They are the perennial losers in every sport they compete in. It's in their blood.

The last one especially.

think the kingjulian one is at the top at the moment.

think the Dhonisgland one might have had more than a hint of tongue in cheek

I might have just struck gold

India have improved leaps and bounds since last time they toured here:

V Sehwag
G Gambhir

Both are much more accomplished openers than last time's openers.

R Dravid

Weak link, weakest link imho. Is clearly past his stuff, am not really sure he;'ll last the whole series tbh.

S Tendulkar

Has been godly since 2008. Can be expected to avg much better than last time's 37, Taufel or not.

VVS Laxman

Champ, in form, and in much better shape than last time.

6th batsman - most likely to be Pujara

Good time to bud this talented chap.

WK

MS Dhoni - Again in good form and a much rounded cricketer as compared to the 07 version anyways.

Bowlers

Harby Singh - Slightly overrated imho, I'd love if they did a left hand selection and took Amit Mishra but Harby's batting has come good leaps nad bounds in the last few years. Still a gun when it suits him.

Ishant Sharma - Kid still, but I believe on the responsive pitches of Eng he'll do a great job, is also coming off a substantial break and regardless of the scheduling of IPL he'll be still feeling relatively fresh.

Sreesanth - definitely should be in for the eng series. Remains mercurial as ever but like he showed in SA in glimpses can be absolutely unplayable in assisting conditions.

Zaheer - Brilliant man.

That XI looks unbeatable imho in paper. Wouldn't be surprised if India register their first away whitewash tbh.
