I think Tendulkar has a minor skill edge over Viv on the basis of being more technically adaptable IMO.
I don't know about that, I think Sachin is better technically but Viv was given reflexes and eyes by god so good that his natural talent makes up for the technical gap and thus in quality Viv might actually be ahead.

Yeah but after 84 his eyesight declined and consistency was hit. Sachin managed a second peak and reached no.1 when he was nearly 40.

But Viv wasn't the type to adapt his game to situations like Sachin or do mega planning. Just relied on his exceptional physical gifts.

tbh easier to adapt when you get the flattest wickets known to man.

Viv did decline after 88 and same with sachin after 2011. Hold your horses till smith retires

Yeah but it's wasn't just on flat wickets. Nor we do need to pretend Viv didn't play on flat wickets. Should we discard his entire 76 Eng series?
I don't really think that is a flat series, Windies bowlers had success, I think it was just Viv and Gordon having the serieses of their lives. but again, Sachin in his peak had better pitches to bounce back from, that was my point, it's harder to bounce back when you're playing on rough wickets all the time.

anyway, I'm fine with having Sachin over Viv, it's a big gap that I find delusional.

76 was a batting friendly series bro c'mon. That's what made Holdings 14 wickets so exceptional.

Ok but I think you are overdoing Sachins flaws while glossing over Viv a bit to just suggest parity. Viv just wasn't the type to plan innings (like Sachin did to take down Warne) and adapt his game with new strokes and modified technique over his career. Viv's output declined with age and lessening of his physical attributes whereas Sachin encountered actual injuries 2003 to 2006 that put a halt to his worldclass returns.

Sachin bounced back 2007 to 2011 and that included series in SA on pace friendly wickets and a great series in Australia in 2007/8 against a very good attack. I don't think reclaiming the no.1 title at near 40 years is a small feat. It's a bit disrespectful to his mastery to just chuck that all to 'flat pitches' because even with those he was averaging 64 in his second peak, well ahead of any post-peak phase of Viv.

Viv never came close to the bat he was in his peak whereas Sachin did thanks to his technique and adaptability.
