If you hit gaps in the first 15, you get boundaries. It's better to try to play conventional strokes in the gap and look for a couple of boundaries an over in the first 15 rather than trying to bunt the ball to third man for singles.

I was wondering how long this would take - you've had at least 10-15 posts in this thread already. I'm disappointed this wasn't in the top 3 or 5 posts.
But the thread is for greatest odi batsman , not for greatest odi player or allrounder.

But yes , I think peak Kapil is worth of today's 40 AVG at 120 SR , so Viv or Sachin doing a 60 at 110 is a possibility.

If India win the World Cup and he is the star of the tournament then there is no doubt at all. Wouldn't disagree with anyone who said he already was though.

Viv batted at 3 and struck at 90. No reason he couldn't have tonned up more
He actually batted at #4 more than he batted at #3, which surprised me a bit. He batted at 3 until Richie Richardson arrived I think.

Interesting. II'm starting to feel there are more legendary bats that batted 4 than 3. 3 is known as the spot where you put your gun player, maybe Bradman gave it that reputation.

But when I'm drafting for a number 3 in our draft games I usually struggle to find a specialist 3, so many famous bats played more at 4 I'm now learning

How is that insane ?
Average great , SR very good.

I just randomly checked Sachin's chasing AVG between 1994 Jan 1 and 2004 Dec 31.
It's 50+ for 11 years.

50 then , 69 now.. I don't see any difference.
So a bloke who averaged 31 in the 90s would average 50 now? I don't see that happening tbh.

I also "randomly" checked Sachin from 1990-1999.

His average is less than 46. Which is not equivalent to 69 today.

The ODI averages haven't gone up by 50% on average. But the difference between Sachin and Kohli's average is 50%. Which just shows how ridiculously good Kohli has been. Let that sink in, 50% better.

The one guy who could really use this world cup to cement his place as the GOAT is not Kohli anyway. It's Rashid Khan.

In the 90s? No, absolutely not. Bevan, Lara, Sachin in that order. Tendulkar was excellent but it was more his longevity and exploits in the 00s that made him the GOAT opener.
1994 onwards , Sachin stats easily the best in the world.

Wisden rated him 2nd best odi bat ever in 2002.

46 at 92 phenomenal
SR far greater than Kohli's

In today's terms , it's like 58 at 110 , not much different from Kohli stats .

What's amazing is , this stats includes 5 years of Sachin's teenage phase and lower order performances. It still compares well with "arguably the greatest chaser ever ".

I think , it's not fair to compare a school boy to a properly grown Cricketer.
That's ok when the guy starting at 15 and retiring at 30. But this is 15 to 40 which is basically an extra ordinary atg career of 20 yrs + extra 4 yrs. And people using that extra 4 yrs to devalue his achievements when comparing with other greats who were good enough to play only 20 yrs.
4 years is for additional points , comparisons must be 20 Vs 20.

And in 2000, Wisden rated Shane Warne the fifth greatest cricketer of the 20th Century. Yet we have all been led to believe that rating was problematic.

There is a little bit of indirect belittling of Sachin currently based on Kohli's exploits. It is happening with my Indian friends as well. But those who saw Sachin play in the 90s and still remember it, will know very well that Sachin will fare better than Kohli in current playing conditions.

Sachin is Rohit+Kohli moulded into one. One who is capable of getting those big 100s consistently as well as strike it cleanly from ball one. I have not seen Viv play live, so cannot comment much on him. But going by the stats and videos, he is terrific as well.

I will just group Sachin, Kohli and Viv in the top bracket and leave it at that since they all belong to totally different ODI eras. Instead of rating them one above another.

And on Stephen saying Bevan was better than Sachin, I don't think he was the best player in his own team. Ponting was. He is great yes, but had his limitations compared to the others mentioned here. Bevan and Dhoni are in the next rung along with Ponting, Gilchrist, Jayasuriya, Lara among others.

Sachin as opener in 90s
142 matches , 49 AVG 92 SR

Overall
228 matches 43avg at 87 SR

Highest ever WC aggregate in 1996

24 X 100s , 40% lead over previous world record

35 man of the matches ( kohli yet to reach 35)

And he was just 26.
