plus, conventionally chases are thought to be harder than batting first. How freaking good is he in chases? He just goes in to a zone where he looks like nobody can get him out and he treats even the best bowlers like they are playing grade cricket.

Almost feels like he is mocking the scoreboard pressure.

I think somebody put it right here in one of the eariler posts. He is probably just one WC knockout game away from being the greatest ODI bat of all time

Viv is for me GOAT still. However Kohli is very close and getting there. He does not have as impactful an innings as Viv's 138* in 1979 final. If Kohli can play an innings like that in a World Cup knockout game(not necessarily against a good bowling attack), he would have matched Viv imo.

Viv's average/strike rate combo of 47/90 is out of the world in his era and he most definitely would have improved it by 15-20% playing today. However it would be a bit over the top to extrapolate that to something like 60/115 or 60/120. To get that kind of record, he would need to take unreal amount of risks as a batter and come out on top every time. The best hitters of modern times(Pandya, Maxwell, Butler, Russel,Afridi etc) strike around 120 but their batting average is pretty low except for Butler who had a short career so far.

My own hypothesis is that Viv would average around 55 and strike at 100-105 taking only calculated risks while still winning a large percentage of matches. He would still be the best player.

Tendulkar wasn't the best bat of the 90s (Bevan) or for much of the 00s (Ponting/Dhoni). But he was close enough in both decades to be considered the better overall batsman. Kohli is great, but it's arguable he isn't the best of the 10s (de Villiers has a better average and strike rate). He will of course hold the record (by a huge margin) for the most runs in the decade, since his career pretty much coincides with this decade and he's played way more ODIs than anyone and has a ridiculous average and strike rate for the decade.

To put Kohli's accomplishments this decade into perspective, in the 00s, Tendulkar played in 211 ODIs. Kohli has played exactly that number of ODIs in the 10s and has 1500 more runs than Tendulkar in the same number of games. Kohli is already 10th on the list of AT run scorers in the ODI format and is set to overtake Dravid in the next couple of matches. He's the only player in the top 10 with less than 300 ODIs and he's only played 226. He has a higher average and a higher strike rate than any player ahead of him. He has the third highest career average in history (the two guys ahead of him have 54 ODIs between them).

To put it simply, he's good. Very good. A great even. And should be considered amongst the top 4-5 ODI batsmen of all time (Viv, ABDV, Bevan and Tendulkar are the other 4).

51 innings at 3, 5 tons. This is already a Tendulkarish ratio. WI opening partnership + bowling would take away a lot of opportunities in chases to ton up. He is 4/24 in setting. Plus general era differences- his 100 is worth a lot more today.
It's Tendulkarish , because Tendulkar played 100 matches when he was a teenager and most of them were in lower order.

Last 11 years of AB devilliers
61 AVG , close to 110 SR

Also , Abbas almost similar to Viv statistically.

Chasings

Viv 45 at 86
Sachin 42 at 89 ( 46 as opener)

If they did this in tougher eras , I can see them destroying bowlers mercilessly in this era irrespective of settings or chasings target . Just like Kohli , or even better (as they were more aggressive)

Abbas did for only 62 matches though, even then he is slightly inferior to Viv statistically.

AB's 61 at 110 is for 70-80% of his career, but the other 2-3 years bring it down to 53 at 101. I am hypothesizing Viv's to be in the same range while also being more impactful than AB.

That means he played 350 opening with more opportunities than viv.

Pick someone elee if you want. If it's not somebody who has been actuve in the last few years, Viv's figures at 3 will still look pretty good-.

Brian Lara
106 innings 12 X 100s ( 46 at 86 )

Viv
51 innings 5 X 100s ( 57.5 at 87)

Abbas
47 innings 6 X 100s ( 46 at 86)

Sachin as opener
340 innings 45 x 100s (48.5 at 88)

1. Sachin ( 100 in every 7.5 matches )
2. Abbas ( 7.8)
3. Lara (8.8)
4. Viv ( 10.2)

Im not sure if any of these ratios are better than Viv- lots less opportunity to score runs. Maybe Abbas, but it's only one extra hundred.

Can't vouch as much for Viv, but I feel like Sachin was definitely more aggressive right from the start, especially as an opener - whereas you'll often see Kohli build up the innings...a 38 (50) suddenly becomes 102 (91) which suddenly becomes 154 (120)

When I look back at Sachin's innings now, it becomes quickly apparent he wasn't that good at rotating the strike in the first 10 overs. Used to hit boundaries to cover for it.

Which innings? He was fine opening with Sourav - before and after that, don't think he had a good enough opening partner. And Sehwag was definitely not a good runner between the wickets...
