What is undeniable is that (although this is a much shorter list due to T20s) he's probably the best all round player the game has seen, though that is a bit unfair on some of the older folk, Viv probably would have been great at ODIs and Sachin did alright for Mumbai Indians.

Modern cricket doesn't count guys
You say that in jest, but in 2018 there were 16 batsmen who scored over 350 runs at an average over 50. Kohli tops the list, averaging 133, but Taylor averaged 91, Tamim Iqbal averaged 85, Rameez Shahzad (UAE) averaged 79 and 12 batsmen averaged over 60 in the year. Santner averaged 46@103 FFS. Santner in 2018, a bowling all rounder, averaged more than Ricky Bloody Ponting and struck at a higher strike rate that Sir Vivian Bloody Richards.

Never has an era been so defined by giant scores and hapless bowlers like this one. It's actually gross how easy batting was in the last couple of years, and it's purely vomit inducing how bad Australian batsmen have been in this period.

By comparison, in 2014, there were 5 players with over 350 runs averaging over 60 and 11 averaging over 50. The highest average that year was de Villiers who averaged 73.

The 2015 WC was a bit of a turning point, even if all indicators were already pointing towards something like it happening. Sanga's 4 hundreds, AB averaging 100 striking at 140, Maxwell striking at 180, 20+ players averaging more than 50.

Boggles the mind how Starc took his wickets at 10 a piece.

Starc was phenomenal in that cup. He was legitimately unplayable at times and it's actually a shame he hasn't had the chance to play more ODI cricket in the intervening period.

Nobody is trying to belittle Sachin.

Idiotic comments like avg of 46 back then equal 69 now probably belittle Kohli though
Nobody said 46 back then equals 69 today.

50 plus at 90 plus equals 69 at 90 plus though.

Pontings and Laras can easily AVG 50 at 90 today , they were 40 at 80 then.
Apply same ratio .

Sachin excluding teenage phase almost same as Sachin as opener .
Ah but Sachin excluding teenage phase should be adjusted for era adjustments so 66.89% is the same as 42.87%

I forgot to mention that adjusting Viv's for era 21% is the same as 125.84% in current era.

Good stuff marc. Out of interest where does Kapil stand once you factor in era and batting position adjusted values? Please exclude all cricket played by him from 1978-1994 (but include 1988).

Ooh that's a hard one because of the parameters.

His raw average was 17.32 at a S/R of 250.27 but when adjusted for era it becomes average of 18.5 at a S/R of 55.26 at current rates.

Batting position is harder but we'll assume he got no not outs if he batted in a proper spot (and also scored fewer runs as let's face it, he wasn't really that much cop) so his raw average becomes 1.75 (so a little bit better than Chris Martin) at a S/R of 13.26 - era adjusting that to present day gives you an average of 55.69 and a S/R of 685.

Some terrific statistical work from Marc here. Very kind of you to take so much time out of your day to look up those figures.

A grateful forum salutes you.
