Interestingly, long-term commentary pairing Tony Greig and Richie Benaud were born on the same day. And, incidentally, so was I.honestbharani said:I noticed something interesting on the CW main page. Yeah, I know, off topic, but still interesting.
The people who made the original King of Spain mugs have released some more after the Ashes, with Gilo sharing the mug with Juan Carlos!Jamee999 said:Both perform their roles well.
However, Giles' nickname is cooler so he takes it.
I saw some at the shop at Edgbaston yesterday saying: Ashley Giles, King of Spain, Governor of Australia.marc71178 said:The people who made the original King of Spain mugs have released some more after the Ashes, with Gilo sharing the mug with Juan Carlos!
That's the clicher for me as well. I just can't imagine Giles being the leader of an attack, which Vettori has been in Bond's absence.FaaipDeOiad said:The fact that Vettori has managed to carry his team at times while Giles struggles with the responsibility of being the 5th bowler is telling.
And probably his bowling??? Definately his bowling !!!!!!Natman20 said:Vettori is far better than Giles. I would say that Vettori's batting at the moment would rate higher than Giles and probably his bowling to
Yeah, but Balaji and McCullum were born on the same day of the same year. 27th september of 1981. Happy Birthday to them.FaaipDeOiad said:Interestingly, long-term commentary pairing Tony Greig and Richie Benaud were born on the same day. And, incidentally, so was I.
edit: Anyway, still Vettori for me, comfortably, with both bat and ball. Vettori's more accurate, has more variations and is more willing attack, and also turns the ball more on your average wicket, especially early in the game. The fact that Vettori has managed to carry his team at times while Giles struggles with the responsibility of being the 5th bowler is telling. And, with the bat, Giles is fairly handy but is terrible against spin and against short pitched bowling, while Vettori is really promising and has all the necessary ability to be a genuine all-rounder.
You think England have been struggling for success in the past few years?whitedazzler said:its gota b vettori hez a strike bowler and takes wickets on a constant basis wether is a turning pitch or a seaming track whilst giles will only bowl a decent amount of the overs if the pitch is turning square othawise hez a couple of overs here and there whilst the english pace bowlers get a rest. batting wise vettori has the edge hez an an attacking batsmen unorthadox but effective. giles is more of a supporting batsmen to a top order batsmen at the other end. and finally in terms of fielding giles has no chance he is to old. personally i think england need to drop giles and stick wit an all seam attack until england can *** up with a decent spinner.
He never said that. Personally, I think he's right... Giles doesn't take wickets, and I reckon he should be replaced with a seamer, and preferably one who can bat.greg said:You think England have been struggling for success in the past few years?
i aggree, if it has not been said before Giles' job is to tie up an end and that gives Vaughan the option of rotating of rotating his 4 quicks at the other end thats why England's attack is always coming at you , Giles some times takes wickets as a bonus though, he had a very good ashes series IMO ok he averaged 52.00 but he took important wickets and his batting has greatly improved giving England strength in depth.Pedro Delgado said:King of Spain is essentially a tie-up bowler I agree, but the advantage he brings (where another seamer wouldn't) is turning the ball from the rough, which can cause problems for batsmen and challenges shot-selection (which can bring wickets, even at t'other end if the scoring rate is lowered). Also it gives the side balance, and gives Vaughan distinctive bowling options on various pitches, another Hoggard-style seamer wouldn't. Added to this is his batting which can be handy (see Oval test) - Tremors/Anderson are pretty much rabbits.
I recognise his limitations as a cricketer, but he also has strengths; he's good enough for Vaughan and Fletcher and he's good enough for me.
What on earth would be the point in picking ANOTHER seamer? And he may not have taken many wickets but every one he did take was worth its weight in gold and match/series turning.andyc said:He never said that. Personally, I think he's right...
