those FACTS are present in the hundreds and hundreds of hours of recorded games from the 80s.
This is an intangiable we are talking about- captaincy skill...not a concrete statistic.
And the reason i can say that without any doubt is because i WATCHED cricket from Border's days.
Exactly!!! so now do you admit its an opinion and you could be wrong??? just as im saying i could be wrong?

goes without saying any opinion CAN be wrong- even if its from the so-called messiah himself.
However, if its backed up by a LOT of stalwarts in the field with sound reasoning, it significantly reduces its chances of being wrong.

If Mark Taylor, Haigh,CLR James, Lloyd,Holding,Harbhajan,Pataudi,Greenidge,Haynes,Holding, etc etc. say that they owe a lot of their success to their captain for help develop them, i would take their word that captains play a crucial role in player development over your's any day of the week.
And any logical person would do so.

ok so the first captain of all time was the best captain ever? ofcourse not, im sure Punter would give a great deal of Kudos to waugh, as does waugh to taylor, its just for the sake of not being arrogant *cough cough*

would love to hear your reasoning for this.
well i dont agree with it... im saying by your reasoning, and if every captain must thank the one before it then it'd come back to the first ever....

sigh.
Its not about crediting everyone further and further back in the chain.
its about who SET UP THE DYNASTY.
Lloyd is where the WI dynasty started. Border laid the groundwork and it was Mark Waugh where the OZ dynasty started.
Steve Waugh took over after all the hard work had been done and minor tunings needed to be made to do course correction along the way..... same as Viv Richards with Lloyd.

You have to really understand and know your cricket to get this.
For this is NOT about thanking people before you and the one before you.
This is about who played the critical part in developing the players under him and who took over an almost finished team.
This dynastic chain's biggest player is Taylor......then Border and then Waugh.
In construction parlaynce, Border laid the foundations, Taylor built the next 30 floors and Waugh built the top 2 and added the token spire on top.

Kim Hughes had very little to do with this, just like Ian Chappell and Simpson before him.
Likewise, in WI's case, Sobers had very little to do with the 70s/80s team and Worrell even less.

I am a patient man but your lack of understanding is trying my patience

UGH!!... i disagree but this has nothing to do with the original point!!!... that waugh was a better skipper than taylor... so are you saying that is waugh was bron at the same stage as taylor that taylor still wouldve made a better captain??? or is it just timing that waugh came later??

simple yes or no

Very strong batting line-up......But has good bowlers who wont give lots of runs away.......You've got line and lenght bowlers in McGrath and Pollock and you also have bowlers with venom and match winning ability....Warne and Akram...

This is my first of many posts people....nice to join this place...

Why so? The title of the thread is "best team" , not "favourite team".

International 12th Man
I've only been watching cricket properly for 4 years or so, so my list might be quite limited, but anyway...

Hayden
Tendulkar
Ponting
Lara
S Waugh
Flintoff
Gilchrist (wk)
Pollock
Warne
Muralitharan
McGrath

I know Flintoff is a bit of a leap, but over the last 12 months he has been so excellent (Tests and ODI's) that I think I'll put him in. Tendulkar will open, even though he might not like it much, but in a side like this certain people have to make sacrifices. :D

ML Hayden
V Sehwag
R Dravid
BC Lara
SR Tendulkar
SR Waugh
AC Gilchrist +
SK Warne
Wasim Akram
CEL Ambrose
AA Donald/M Muralitharan

Pretty self explanatory for the most part. I don't rate Gilchrist that highly as a 'keeper, but his batting makes generally makes up for it, and I haven't seen many other viable options... No 'keepers close in batting at least.
I'm leaning towards 2 spinners, perhaps removing Waugh and getting an all-rounder... maybe in a year or so, Flintoff could be there :) .

since i am 23 i guess i barely qualify.
Based on players who played during or after i started following cricket ( watched is a bit ambigous- i watched the Don on clips, Sobers on tapes etc :D ), here is my alltime XI:

Desmond Haynes
Mattew Hayden
Viv Richards
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Steve Waugh*
Adam Gillchrist+
Malcolm Marshall
Curtley Ambrose
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath
woah woah...I am confused..on other threads you have made out that you watched county cricket in the mid 80's, watched the WI's at their peak etc...now by my reckoning you were 4. Do you honestly think you can make accurate comparisons on teams and players (for example the WI's vs Australia thread) when you were only just out of the oven in the time we were talking about. I thought i was debating with someone who actually saw the teams play, did not know I was debating with someone who relies on old highlights and didnt understand the context of the play in question. I am disapointed
