International Coach
The IPL auction has never made sense. Absolutely everything about it seems random other than Indian players go for more which is obvious why.

That Australian batsman Jake-Fraser McGregor literally has a terrible record in every form of the game and went for 1.6. For whatever reason Australian players have always fetched more in the auction but I think that has to do with all the coaches they have in the league.
lol Fraser-McGurk was hitting 50s off 15 balls for fun in his first season, you can't see the upside?

I haven’t watched a ball of the IPL in 10 plus years, wouldn’t have a clue who does what. Can’t have hit too many 50’s though when he averages 21 in 20/20 cricket for his career.

Along with averaging 17 in ODI cricket, 16 for in international 20/20 cricket and 18 in FC cricket. Looks like a bonafide scrub to me. But hey this is the same league that just paid Marcus Stoinis 2 million so I’m guessing he’s also a IPL mega star too?

Yeah you're right, there definitely is (averaged 36 with a 200+ strike rate in his first season). He's just such a junkyard dog player. I've never liked watching a player less. He plays like Peter Ingram if Pinger was facing free hit no balls every delivery

BJ Jacobs signed, a 13 year old signed, JFM gets $1.6m for being a hack...the IPL is a joke
Jacobs for $60k is a pretty reasonable buy imo. Granted it's unusual for an uncapped NZ player.

The 13 yr old seems more a marketing gimmick than anything else. Apparently the guy is already in their under 19 side. Will probably appeal to younger fans who see him as the next superstar and sell some merchandise.

Good on him. Probably won't play a game but will be a fantastic learning experience.

Wouldn't be surprised if we see the IPL establishing a 2nd tier/A comp in the next few years, with speculative buys like Jacob's being loaned out to get a better idea of how they might go in the big leagues.

JFM is just a budget Finn Allen.

Ponting has forever used the IPL as his own mini Aussie coaching clinic and tries to pick the players he likes, either as projects or to help them with their comebacks etc. Same has happened now with Punjab.

But more seriously, think coaches obviously go with familiarity when they get their chance to punt on some youngsters. Its the reason Fleming gets a lot of Kiwis over to CSK.

But for reasonable prices, surely. Could you see Flem fork out $1.6m on Rachin? I very much doubt it. Though I take the general point.

I think that's increasingly how these franchise owners might use their teams in that Saudi comp.

Ngl it's ironic seeing some kiwi posters losing it over a guy who made 330 runs @2.5 runs a ball last season getting a big pay day yet not raising a fuss over rachin getting nearly a mill when he's a 25 YO with a career t20 batting average of 17 and a T20I batting average of 15 who averaged 22 @160 last IPL and didn't bowl.

Mcgurk had one of the most absurd ipl seasons ever seen last year and is getting rewarded for that. If he even does half of that for a season across the next 3 year cycle he's worth the money.

Isn't your view of Ravindra lacking the same context, then? He was clearly not bought on the back of T20 form, but on the back of a stellar 50-over world cup. In India, no less.

Good luck to JFM, I say.

Fair point. Rachin is another example. Should never have been playing T20 and got originally drafted off the back of mainly batting 7 and bowling the odd over in T20Is.

Kyle Jamieson was another example, potentially, although at least he'd exhibited beast mode for a season...but not in that format. Then flopped when given his big pay day

I freely admit I am not rational when it comes to this competition. I used to love it back in the early days when I thought it could extend careers, but now I abhor it. Guys like JFM, Allen trot the world with similar sized egos to guys who made 10,000 Test runs across a decade or more. The cricketing version of Hawk Tuah.

Saw BJ Jacobs a lot last season for Sydenham in Chch, couldn't believe the power - if anyone is familiar with Sydenham Park he was hitting 6's that were going over Brougham Street. Might be most powerful hitter I've seen since CdG.
Yeah this is the lad a mate of mine was raving to me about 12 months ago. He said even his mis-timed shots were travelling 80-85 metres on the fly, and well over 100 meters when he middled it.
