On the U19s
Only one century and one fifty among the entire team, over 5 games. Tells the story that the batting was the problem.
While the seam bowling was pretty good. 3 of the front line seamers averaging under 20 with the ball:
On the domestic thread. Someone pointed out after the team was selected that only 1 of the top 10 run-scorers from the domestic U19 tournament made the team. And in fact 2 of the specialist bats selected averaged sub-20 in the domestic tournament (as well as in the world cup)
The team was largely selected after the previous years U17 tournament. With only Nelson forcing his way in from the U19 tournament (and also eventually Foulkes as an injury replacement).
I don't want to get down on the kids at all. Every single one of them made their YouthODI debut during this tournament.

and look at their recent results for the last year, you'll see the wealth of experience some of the other teams have already got - before they are put under the spotlight of live televised Youth world cup.
E.g. Bangladesh. In the previous 8 months before the fixtures disappear off the page. Have had the Asia U19 championships, a Quad tournament in India, a bi-lateral with SAF U19s etc

To put some perspective on it. How the U19s should just be the start of a journey, not a defining moment.
Will O'Rourke looks now primed and ready to make his test debut aged 22.
4 years ago he was in the U19s.
He looked the best potential pace bowler from the domestic tournament from the streams. If not the statisically dominant.
But at U19 international level, he was pretty un-penetrative. Mono-skilled (in-swinger) to go with his good for that age pace. 5 matches, 2 wickets, bowling average of 70.

Several years ago (E.g. the Ravindra and Allen cycle). NZC entered the U19s into the domestic Provincial A tournament, as a prudently cost-effective alternative to sending them on costly international bi-laterals.

To leave it on a positive note. 3 of the current U19 team are young enough to return in 2 years time.
And looking at this year's domestic tournament, as referenced earlier, of those top 10 runs scorers not selected. 3 of them are young enough to play in 2 years time.

Conway is not technically perfect, and the way he is sometimes described as either a nurdler or a stylist/technician has sometimes struck me as inaccurate - but the below still seems like a very weird description of his batting:Stuff

Ellis shouldn't play for Aus again after tanking a game for Hobart because he couldn't be arsed running two off the last ball of the match. And David's attitude and fielding were a disgrace basically the entire season. Aus should be rewarding performance in the Big Bash not whatever the hell Big Time Timmy Jim thought he was doing.
