McGill was decent at best; turned the ball but didn’t have anywhere near the control of Warne. I could only imagine how bad he would have been in spinners’ then-graveyard ie. India had he played there.

Yea he has a worse record vs India than Warne, and that's without ever playing in India. He'd have been absolutely murdered.

Bro, nobody thinks Macgill is atg, he was very very good. As a matter of fact, there hasn't really been an atg spinner in the last 30 or so years outside of Warne and Murali.

Lemme guess, you probably don't rate Saqlain either and pretty much everyone here agrees he too was an excellent spinner.

Macgill is no Warne, only really Murali among modern spinners is comparable. But he was a damn fine spinner, roughly equivalent to someone like Bob Willis (among fast bowlers).

If Anderson is considered ATVG (he certainly isn't great), then Gillespie definitely is. Twice the bowler Anderson is, and performed in sunlight as well as cloud.

Just read the comment on other page saying he would have bee near ATG. It’s pretty cringeworthy really. His record against SC sides aside, he wasn’t even great against WI who had Lara. He did well against the sides who didn’t play spin well.

Have no issue if someone rates Gillespie as such. I have seen him and he was fantastic! Same doesn’t go for McGill unfortunately.

Not really sure why Saqlain should be considered clearly better than MacGill tbh. They have pretty much identical records. Saqlain gets a little overrated because of that one series in India. Which was great dont get me wrong, but its not representative of his whole career. Obviously TJB massively overrates Macgill but he was still pretty damn good.

Perhaps. Saq’s highest averages are still lower than MacGill and I am biased because he did well against us and also could bowl doosra. But you are right: it’s not good enough to be considered upper-tier.
