Personally I'd pick a wicket-keeper, players who aren't banned and I wouldn't include a number 7 who's more of a jack of all trades than anything in Tests but maybe I'm just fussy about those sort of things.

My world XI would be

Virender Sehwag
Graeme Smith*
Kumar Sangakarra
Sachin Tendulkar
Jacques Kallis
VVS Laxman / Shane Watson
Tim Paine+
Graeme Swann
Dale Steyn
Zaheer Khan
Doug Bollinger

Sehwag
Watson
Amla
Tendulkar
Kallis
Sangakarra
Laxman/Bell/ABDV
Swann
?
Steyn
Bollinger

Final seamer would be dependant on conditions, in England I'd take Jimmy and maybe swap Bolly for Zaheer. Otherwise I'd either go for Johnson or Morkel.

Vettori is quality test match all-rounder. Its crazy to call him a "jack of all trades".

He doesn't warrant selection in a world XI with the bat and definitely not with the ball, as essentially a 5th/6th bowler so far better to pick a batsman (or maybe a wicket-keeper)

He certainly warrants selection to bat @ 7 in a world XI based on his form with the bat in the 2-3 years. I can certainly see him being very effective in such a team where he has quality back-up, where he can be used as an attacking bowler. Since the story of Vettori career with the ball is him having to be more defensive given the lack of support in his NZ side.

Plus i would think having those 6 bowling options makes the attack brilliant for all conditions. You would just have to know when to bowl who @ what stage of the match. I.e on the first couple days with something in the pitch Vettori probably wont bowl alot & Kallis would, backing up the 3 main quicks. But on wearing 5th day wicket him & Swann would be bowling most of the overs.

I wont pick another keeper, since outside of Boucher none of the others aroud the world give a compelling case to be picked. Sanga can do that job.

Plus although you could pick another bat i.e De Villiers/Laxman/Jaywardene, i dont like the idea of Sanga batting lower than # 6. So i'm fine with that team.

Not including banned players:

Steyn
Anderson
Bollinger

...for me, this provides the most variety as well as basically including the three most on form fasty bowlers (apart from Zaheer, maybe, but i prefer Anderson atm).

Oh and on this "current World XI" thing that this thread seems to have turned into, are people forgetting Matt Prior as keeper-batsman? As Kumar no longer fulfills the keeper role I see no other option, personally...

Edit: To be fair, looks as though the Boucher has a pretty good test record recently, although he seems to be getting faded out of the team.

Selecting Sanga as a keeper in a world XI is wishful thinking. Easily the team's number 3 though.

Watson
Sehwag
Sangakkara
Tendulkar

Would be my top 4 at the moment pretty comfortably.

Cant pick Anderson in a world XI. He is only good when the ball is swinging. Yet to prove himself on flat wickets as a wicket-taking force againts good eams.

Prior indeed is an option for keeper in a world XI. But i dont know he just doesn't seem world XI material regardless of his recent solid batting form. Would go for Boucher if you really wanted a keeper @ # 7 still.

Plus Sanga not keeping for SRI doesn't mean that he still is not a good keeper however. Its just circumstances surrounding the balance of the SRI test team.

Why?. Their seems to be an incorrect notion that Sangakkara not keeping is sign that affects his test batting or something. When it fact his batting peak just coincided with him leaving the gloves IMO. AFAIS, the only reasons Sangaka doesn't keep in tests is because its a great strain to do that along with being captain & # 3. He does all 3 in ODIs & T20 very well. If SRI had a WC all-rounder batting @ 6 or 7in tests for example, i think it would have been very possible for him to stay keeping & his rate of runscoring wouldn't decline at all IMHO.
