The "Can't believe they lost from there" Thread

International Debutant
West Indies v Australia in 1996 WC semi-final. From a virtually unassailable position just made every mistake in the book; panic slogs, foolish running between wickets, (Richardson going for single in final over), pointless changing the batting order... it had it all.

The most startling thing about it was that the commentators were even noting that when the Windies still had 7 wickets in hand they were playing some unnecessary slogs. Just a total loss of nerve and belief they could get there by batting sensibly.

Most of that was down to Shane Warne who turned out to be a hero. Well he was already a hero then and that made him a super hero.

It's often forgotten amongst the comical West Indies chase that they actually won an important toss and had Australia something like 15 for 4 after 10 overs with Ponting and both Waugh's already out.

The first day of that match was one of the first days of test cricket I paid any serious attention to. Didn't watch the other days for some reason, and looking up the match a couple of years later I was staggered to find that Pakistan had somehow lost.

Whatever it takes!!!
The Harbhajan test...

Any time I ever feel sorry for India overseas, I remember that game and smile at whatever pain they're currently suffering.

The worst part is one of the most unlikely NZ sides of all time could have run away with a 1-0 series victory in india if they close out that game then avoid collapsing to ishant sharma in the 3rd test.
Do you still feel this way, Flem?

I dont think it quite qualifies but the whitewash by NZ of India in India last year fits the theme of the thread, even though the individual games were hardly the likes to be put here.

Kenya were hosting a tri (or was it four) nation t20 series a year or two back. We had bashed everyone comfortably en route to a final against Uganda, were chasing a modest target, but somehow went from needing 30 off 5 overs (with two set middle order batsmen) to getting bowled out a 2 runs short.

Yeah. Some things just have a lasting impact. It felt like when the cricket captain games engage catch up and crush you mode but irl. It felt like India used console commands.

Afghanistan vs Australia world cup match wins this thread hands down. A one legged Maxwell with Cummins shouldn't have been able to get 200+ runs to win. That's the biggest choke of all time.
