The "Can't believe they lost from there" Thread

I feel as if the 2015 game at Lord's was just as bad. 403-3 replying to England's 389, only to end up losing by 124 runs. That was woeful.
That was a bad one, one of the last examples I can remember of NZ really getting the speed wobbles. But at least in that game, there was extenuating circumstances - the weather on day 3 was heavily overcast and batting became very difficult, while the weather on day 4 was beautiful clear skies. NZ shouldn't have lost but I don't think it's quite as bad as the 08 Manchester test.

My enduring memory of that game was Baz getting out, which to all money felt like 'ah well, we're 400-3, we're home and hosed here'. I vividly remember seeing it and thinking that was wildly irresponsible.

I think you can make an argument that Baz's approach was a calculated risk in extremely difficult batting conditions. He'd batted that way his entire innings, and adding a partnership of 70 was extremely valuable. If Baz cost NZ the game anywhere in that match it was with his commitment to hyper aggressive field sets on day 1 that allowed England to rattle along at 4.5rpo.

the baz mccullum 300 game gets a lot of press because it was inflicted on india, but the partnership that broke that nz record (williamson and watling) took nz from 'you're gonna lose heavily to sri lanka in nz, you should be ashamed' to a position of strength where nz ended up winning that game. mark craig took 4fer iirc.

Yeah, SL dropped a sitter off KW late on day 3 when NZ were only 50 in front I think. Felt sorry for Sanga, his 200 in the first innings deserved to be a match winning effort.

This game deserves a mention despite NZ pulling through in the end:

The fact that India looked on target to complete a comfortable win after conceeding a 300 run first innings deficit is insane. Thank god for Wagner.
that was such a good game. kinda meme nz that in the midst of indian batsmen having fantastic away games, nz snicked them off but early rohit got 70 haha.

dhawan was such a decent player as well. id forgotten the indian bowling effort was joint. i thought ishant was the main menace in the 105.

that's kohli's best knock in nz. i know he got the day 5 'nobody cares' ton after mccullum, watling and neesham put india on suicide watch but that 67 actually meant something, and he almost had the game too.

I know I've talked about this in detail before but Australia had basically already won the game when India was 120/8 with 96 more runs to win and Laxman (who was so injured he batted at No.10 in the first innings and lasted all of a painful 3 balls) comes in on hunchback to bat with Ishant Sharma and somehow wills India to the win. Even the bookies gave India no chance at 120/8. It was so great.

Nz were unlikely to win with over 20 runs to get in the last over with only 3 wickets in hand then Mark Richardson carved Shane Warne for 3 sixes to get in to a position from which they looked certain to win. Warnie worked up his magic afterwards bowling Richardson around his legs, Vettori caught and then Tuffey running himself out from the last ball. Incredible stuff
Hahahaha this is too good. I spent way too much time trying to figure out what the hell you were on about, and when this could ever have happened.

Billy Birmingham is an absolute genius. And lucky he existed when he did, because he couldn't exist in 2021.

The most obvious implosion is the women's CWC final 2017. India folded in a heap from 191-3 to 219 all out. Last 7 wickets lost for 30 to lose by 9 runs. I can't remember a bigger choke than that in an important game, complete implosion

Not a great look to lose from there . And by 9 wickets..roasted from 289-1 batting first

Haha yeah. I don't think there is much to distinguish the current Aust commentary voices though and even if he did, there are hardly any cliches like it was with Richie, Bill and Tony
I'm sure he'd have a field day with Kerry O'Keefe, but yeah, not much else to work with with the current bunch.
